Just bought and set up this 6in "heavy duty" vise from Sears.  Didn't notice this until I lagged it down to my work table.  What the hell.  Craftsman has seriously gone down hill.  Looks like the crack was preexisting from production and they just simply covered it up with their finish.

Is it a crack, or just a casting flaw?

looks like it is from the casting and not a crack.  just a visual defect, but exchange it if you are not happy with it.

Perhaps it is just a casting flaw but still... You'd think quality control would throw that out...

Doubt you could tell.

Return it, OP.

Maybe i'll beat the piss out of it and see if it opens up before I return it... just to show them that it is a crack.

I don't know if you're going to take it back or not, but if you are looking for a good vice take a look at this one, i've had one for a couple years now and its held up to my abuse

I'm pretty sure thats from the casting - not the vise itself.

Take a sledge hammer to it, and share your results. It's the only way to really find out.

As others have said, it's a casting flaw.

The mold cracked during the pour.

I broke a jaw off of a Snap-On vise back in the '80s. It was one of their big vises, and I was using a cheater bar, but damn. The dealer on the truck was impressed.
