Nice, they come with gear wrenches now. Seems like a pretty solid deal.

The Sears store here is closing in a week. They are cleaned out.

$199.99 worth of garbage.
No where near what they used to be. |

Lowes is doing the $99 Kobalt socket/ratchet/wrench set again Friday
|

It's a decent set, I agree on 12 point shit. I've rebuilt engines and transmissions with this set and some addition specialty tools.
If you can't get shit done with this set....it ain't the tools.
|

I have a set from a few years back that looks to be almost the exact same, I have not broken anything and use it ALL the time! Definitely with it for someone who wrenches at home!
|

The craftsman ratchets I bought in 1985 are still gtg. Every single one I bought 2 years ago have already went to shit.
Never buying again. It's a real shame, they really were a good value years ago. Now they're just junk. |

Nice, they come with gear wrenches now. Seems like a pretty solid deal. The wrenches are Craftsman copies. Not Gearwrench. I purchased my set a while back before the new Chinese stuff. It's a decent set for the sale price, there are some duplicate socket sizes and small stuff. No case. If you look around there should be coupon you can stack to save a bit more. 334 piece set |
|
Some years ago I walked in to my local sears and they had this set on sale for like 60 bucks. I don't know if it was a pricing error or what, but I bought two.

The worst part about craftsman (and probably any manufacturer, but crafstman for sure) is when you lose a few pieces.
Go in to Sears and try and backfill the sockets and wrenches that have somehow went missing, and pretty soon you're spending as much as a complete kit. |

Now they're just junk. View Quote Over the years I worked on a box of tools, Craftsman's quality would go from fair to junk back to fair then junk again. I bought some to get enough to turn wrenches then partially upgraded to quality tools. My Craftsman stuff got demoted to emergency car tool kits. There is a couple of ratchets that stayed in the main box that were from the better days of Craftsman. |

So many 12-point sockets.
Never, ever, use a 12-point when you can use a 6-point. Kharn |

OK so who else make a set for the same money that is better and lifetime guaranteed?

I went into the one at Hulen in Fort Worth yesterday and they fleeced me for about $400.... Went to the mall to help my FIL get an exorcise bike. While he was milling with that I was binge shopping.
Gear Wrench sets for 1/2 off (20 piece $49.99, 32 Piece $79.99), Craftsman brand gear wench sets 1/2 off (14 Piece Reversible $59). Got a $200 "mechanics" toolset for $89ish. Bought it to keep in my jeep cause god knows I needs it in there. They also have a Ratchet and socket set where the socket things are Torx, allen, etc bits for $29.00. Bought 3 of those to put one in jeep, one in work truck, one in gun tools. 10 piece 3/8 and 1/4 boxed sets for $9.99. I have a helluva set of sockets, wrenches, etc at home already but have been lacking in that area in my work truck. Just about every box I bought had at least a 3/8" ratchet in it. I should never have to buy another 3/8 ratchet again! . |

So many 12-point sockets. Never, ever, use a 12-point when you can use a 6-point. Kharn View Quote I was going to respond about that from a poster above. 12 point is very handy when you have limited access to a bolt and can barely fit the ratchet. 6 point is what should be used for the most part. That set should be good for the weekend warrior, not the best anymore. Their sockets seemed to have gotten smaller in diameter and their rp ratchets are crap. I have only bought one Craftsman in the past 8 years and it was the 1/2 premium grade ratchet. Made in the USA and very nice. I still have and use some older Craftsman, but they are the minority with SK being the majority. |
|
Not a bad deal for home use, hell I even have some 1/4 drive sae craftsman sockets in my tool cart at work. But any more I prefer stuff off the tool trucks, just makes warranty easier and like others have said the quality of craftsman is not what it once was.

I still have my made in the USA Craftsman tools I bought when I was in high school back in the '80s. My grandkids will still be wrenching with them long after the Chinese made crap they are selling now have been recycled.

40 peices are Allen keys and screw driver bits. View Quote Probably a dozen or more of the "pieces" will be shitty plastic pouches, drill bit holders and other bits of cheap plastic rubbish. Typical Sears! My HF now carries tools of better quality than my Sears does! And for 1/7th of the price! |

The ratchets in that kit suck balls. Sounds to me like you need some Red Lube of Love(Permatex 81950), Marvel Mystery Oil or SuperLube, this video shows how to do it, but use the lube, not grease like in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsoN_Aal7MU That being said, there are better ratchets available, but not many at the price point for Craftsman ones, especially if you already have them. Hate to admit it but I still have my starter 3/8 drive ratchet set from the late 80's. I also still have the $200 tool set I started wrenching with back in the mid 90's. Although these tools were downgraded to just home use. Just about most of my stuff now is Snap On or Bluepoint.

Lowes is doing the $99 Kobalt socket/ratchet/wrench set again Friday View Quote I bought a Kobalt ratcheting right-angle screwdriver set on sale the other day, and was immediately disappointed with the quality. The ratchets randomly change direction on their own, and the pawls like to ignore some of the teeth on the cogwheels. Reminds me a lot of HF stuff. |

The best set is the "all metric mechanics tool set" 201 pieces. On sale now for 250 bucks. Comes with flare wrenches and a ton of 6 point and 12 point copies of each socket. It's a great set that doesn't waste time with anything inch related which for most don't need. The large sockets go very large much bigger than the OP's set which can come in handy
I still want the inch set but it's never on sale, I work on old vehicles and tractors sometimes. For about 500 in both sets you have 2 pairs of each socket wrench, double the extensions and so on. |
|
Probably a good deal, but I wouldn't count on Sears being around a few years down the road to honor whatever warranty they have.

OK so who else make a set for the same money that is better and lifetime guaranteed? View Quote The Craftsman "Lifetime" guarantee may become a moot point in the near future. Sears/KMart is ultimately going to go down in my opinion. If you are looking for a set of "Lifetime guarantee" tools, then you need to look at Lowes, Home Depot, or Harbor Freight, |
