DELEON SPRINGS –– A DeLeon Springs man was accidentally shot in the leg when a cow knocked a pistol out of his father's hand Thursday, a sheriff deputy said.
Jerold Fieser, 55, and his son Jonathan Fieser, 33, were attempting to kill a sick cow in one of the cattle pens on their farm at 5866 Lake Winona Road about 1:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, a sheriff's report states.
Jerold Fieser aimed his 8-shot .22-caliber pistol at the cow but the animal suddenly jumped, knocking the cocked pistol out of his hand. The handgun fell to the ground, discharged a round and the bullet struck Jonathan Fieser in the left leg just above the ankle, the report states.
Jonathan Fieser was alert and talking with paramedics. He was transported non-emergency in stable condition to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, said EVAC spokesman Mark O'Keefe.
