Quoted:
Joseph McCarthy was a prick in some ways, but he was damn correct about the Soviet penetration of all levels of the State Department and other government agencies!
His personal life and style was a set back to anti-Communism for some time, but he did succeed in raising the public's awareness of the Soviet threat here in the USA.
BTW, Alger Hiss was a Soviet spy!
Now, that's a fact that the liberal Left should be reminded of on a daily basis!
Oh, and the Rosenbergs were both guilty of espionage!

Nobody would seriously argue that McCarthy's view of the dangers of Communism were wrong. Even many of his most vociferous opponents in the Senate were as opposed to Communism as he was. They just didn't believe that waving folded up papers and Crying "I have a list of the Communists in the State Department", when all he was holding were blank sheets of paper, and there was no such list in existance, was the way to go about the good fight.
Joe McCarthy was a self aggrandising drunk, who used his anti Communist ravings to further his own personal agenda. No, he wasn't wrong in his attitude that Communism was a danger to the free world, but he was damned wrong in the miserable, people destroying, self aggrandising way he went about it.
Yes, Alger Hiss was a Communist, the Rosenbergs were guilty, and many people in Hollywood were (and probably still are) lefties; and Joe McCarthy, with his rantings and ravings probably helped them far more than he hurt them. He, and the House Unamerican Activities Committee, made anti Communism an object of fear, loathing, and ultimately ridicule to a majority of this country for years.
