isn't a barrel a lenght of pipe as far as shipping goes - does it make a difference because it's imported?

I don't think that it would be importable if the firearm that it's made for is not importable. Since the bullshit barrel ban of 2005 I believe this is the case.
There could be ways around it though. I don't know how they determine what configuration determines not importable vs importable. They bring in new AK 74 barrels from Russia as Saigas, but then you can't bring in an AK 74 parts kit.
