Uniformed Prison Guard Gunned Down At His Home
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A California correctional officer in full uniform was shot and killed this morning in the driveway of his Sacramento home as he was leaving for work.

39-year-old Steve Lo was shot this morning at his home in South Sacramento. Sacramento police say they got a call of a shooting about 4:59am. When officers arrived, they found Lo lying near his garage. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Lo was worked for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for the past three years. He was assigned to the California Medical Facility in Vacaville. Lo leaves behind a wife, three sons and two daughters.

Police and corrections officials say they have no other details, including whether Lo was targeted because of his job. No suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information about the shooting is to call CRIME ALERT at (916) 443-HELP. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.

Not even safe in front of your own home...Sad

And people object when SWAT cops wear balaclavas?

And people want to know why cops' home addresses are routinely scrubbed from public databases?

This is why.

First off .........

Secondly, IF it was job related, (and not family related) how much you want to bet he was wearing a full uniform without a sidearm? I have said it a million times, uniform without gun = walking target.

You are assuming he did not have a firearm on him, which may or may not be so. However, on duty or off, whenever we are in full uniform, we will always be target. In California many correctional officers do NOT have the authority to carry guns. They are correctional officers,, not police officers. In any event we should not "Monday morning quarterback" without more information,,,, and may he rest in peace... hinking.gif

Not trying to MMQB, not trying to disrespect him. Yes, I am assuming he was not armed. I sincerely hope he was armed. Problem is that after being in this business for umpteen years, I know how it goes. If he or anyone else is in uniform, he or anyone else damn well better have a weapon on. If he or anyone else is not authorized to carry, take off the shirt, period.

Quite awhile ago we had a CO shot at a 7-11. The officer was inside and the loser decided to rob the place. Saw the uniform and shot him. He was not armed and enroute to work.

It changed our policy and all officers in uniform must be armed.

If he has to meet POST requirements, he should be armed. IF the state recognizes him as a peace officer, he should be carrying in uniform.

It's just sad to hear of these tragic stories. He may have been targeted specifically or he may have been a target of opportunity.

Hopefully they'll find those responsible.

Brothers, take all measures you can to protect yourselves. Don't advertise and carry if you can.
