Every time I've had a coroner come to a scene they've had a handgun on them and a shotgun in the car. Some even have rifles.

It may have something to do with the Sheriff department shift supervisor preforming the coroner duties.

Same here.

The sheriff is the coroner here. Yet nobody ever says "I'm running for coroner"

Bama is your coroner the one that takes Office of Sheriff over in case of death, or incarceration of the Sheriff? That's how it is here. Just curious.

They're watching too much CSI.

Miss. is the state with a Tier 1 coroner that does 1800 autopsies a year.

No but the coroner is the only person who can arrest the sheriff.

Yeah we have that too.

So if a warrent is issued against the Sheriff, only the Coroner can serve it/ pick him up?

Link Posted: 3/17/2011 10:35:05 AM EST
the election for coroner is always competitive around here. I have no idea why so many people want that job (i'm sure there is one)

anyway i have no problem with them carrying. I can see plenty of reasons why they would need one other than first line of defense against the zombies

Our county coroner has been a sheriff's deputy for decades. He's also been a gun dealer for decades and you can see him with a table at most of the local shows.

WHAT IN THE FUCK!?

To both of these statements.

What is the reasoning for this?

Conflict of Interest...!!!!!!

My buddy's dad was a deputy coroner when I was in HS. He was able to carry and did. I asked him (back then) why they would want coroners armed and he said it was because they made death notifications to the family in person and you never know how they would react. Looking back I'm sure he made his share of trips into the gang infested neighborhoods in Joliet at all hours, and I wouldn't have wanted to be unarmed in those neighborhoods either.

Don't coroners regularly go to trial, and based on their testimonies convict many criminals? Shouldn't they be in the same boat as the Judges/Lawyers/cops/etc who put them away? Go get your CCW and carry...

Most all Coroner's in California are an armed position stemming from being tied directly to the sheriff's offices.

Not that big of a deal provided they go through the same standards of training to qualify as the area police/sheriff.

Firearm related story.

Also coroners are elected here and I would think a CCW permit would cover them.

You elect your corner?

Gotta watch out for the Med students stealing bodies for a little extra lab practice. Or the homeboys who left some evidence behind.

Yes. No training required.

Same as a person can be elected sheriff and never been an LEO or POST cert.

A sheriff in my academy class had never been an LEO before.

Sheriff's over here are elected as well, and don't need any LEO background.

But they're also limp dicked in power. They're more of a figurehead than an actual police force.

Our corner (we call the Medical Examiner) is run by the prosecutor's or on the state level... What does your coroner do exactly? Is it more of a figurehead?

Because he lies in favor of the State's interests.
