Lots get shot here when they are mistaken for geese by new hunters. I talked with a DNR officer who thinks the punishment for shooting one should be eating it. They taste that bad.I didn't ask him how he knows what a protected species tastes like.

Shot a merganser hunting near a salmon stream one time and it coughed up 4x 3-5 inch trout or salmon smolt.  Can't imagine what a huge flock would eat every day.

I have never understood why those fish eating bastards are protected.

Thanksgiving fun fact:

Wherefore art thou does not actually mean "where are you"

Wherefore means "why"

We're inundated with European Starlings and Grackles with the Grackles being protected because they're migratory.  Hundreds used to descend upon the yard where the bird feeders were and they ate everything in sight.  I used the air rifle to shoot quite a few, cut their heads off and propped them up on pikes for their friends to see.    It didn't make a difference, they just kept coming.  We had to change out every feeder on the property to remove the food source so they finally moved on.  BTW, I'm in suburbia so the air rifle was the best I could do.

They have opened up a limited season for them here, I believe just in certain areas. I suspect (hope) that many shoot them at any opportunity.

I think .17HMR would be a perfect match for such an adversary.

You mean those water turkeys aren't just a moister version of their land cousins?  Grandpa had me fooled all these years.
