My mom had an Astro van back in the day, the Astro has always been one of my favorites. Saw this on ebays and had to post it up. It's not mine, just think it's awesome.

It's been about 12 years since we had to get rid of my mom's Astro(and it wasn't AWD...they didn't have AWD back in 88) but it was an awesome van. Handled everything my family could throw at it...except ONE snowbank, my dad tried to get it over and threw a rod.

I bet it handles like a dream

That is a bad ass van.

Chrysler/Plymouth used to have a minivan with a factory 2.5L 4cly turbo motor. They were quick.

A guy on a car forum I used to frequent built an Astro like that in the late 90's. Heres a way old video of it.

Notice my latest comments have meant "GM in it's present iteration" or "GM post-Obama."

GM post-Obama can suck it.

FYI, 'post Obama' means after he has left office.

One of my mechanics still has an AWD Astro.
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 8:35:50 PM EDT
Dear god, why?

(As an aside, I'm glad the 'ricer' fad faded... I got tired of smoking them in my F'ING JEEP when they would rev their engines next to me... Now that I actually own something (or 2 somethings) fast... well...)

Mileage: 999,999 miles

taken form the link

if that is correct that is quite a lot of miles on that van or engine

I giggled when I seen a lowering kit for the Astro vans, this one tops the cake
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 8:45:03 PM EDT
And antique plates to boot.
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 8:55:13 PM EDT
that's really nice

my personal Astro van story was my 2nd ever auction on ebay

Friend had a astro van and for some dumbass reason actually bought a hypertech chip for the thing
Well he traded off the van but decided to keep the chip , and asked me if i would put it on eBay as this was way back in the day and he didn't have an account

well long story short someone actually paid $50 for a used hypertech chip for a astro van with a 4.3L
he was so happy in fact he sent me updates and videos of how great the van ran and how happy he was with the elimination of the speed limiter

dude sent me emails off and on for YEARS about how great his van was now , became an inside joke amongst our group of friends
Link Posted: 11/17/2011 9:01:00 PM EDT
If I had to guess, this is the van.

yep
said in the auction it doesn't have the 406 anymore

Yo Deej, that thing is baaaaaadass!

I'd bid on it, but the mileage is a little high for 1988 at 999,999!

I loved the minivan of my youth (friends mom's ride) so much that I picked up a Honda Odyssey for my kids!
It handles like a dream and fucking hauls ass (all four of them)!!! In fact I like the MV more than both of our other cars (F150 and Chevy SUV)

Great post!

I was/am always fascinated by the quite large aftermarket for Astro vans. It is definitely something that was not common around my area, must have been more common in cali or something to customize them,

Looks like it started out as a great concept, and then gradually went full retard...

The whole point of having a van is passenger and cargo space - and NOTHING increases passenger and cargo space more than rear bucket seats, a fuel cell, and a tube steel roll cage!

Should have stopped at the point where he had a really fast van...that was still useful as a van.

My buddy Mike sold that van to Kenneth. They built that for the sole purpose of being on the show Pinks. They did it kind of as a joke but really just to have something different. Kenneth said that when Rich Christiansen asked him to be on the show and Kenneth agreed, he asked him what he was going to bring. Kenneth said "A ten second mini van". He said Rich looked at him like . Hahaha The Black '70 Nova that had the real flames on it was also my buddy Mikes. He is a custom painter and owned that car for a long time. Wish I still had the video of him doing donuts in front of the GoodGuys show in Dallas.

Vans are under appreciated. If I could get a production 4x4 van, I'd strongly consider it.

It would be hilarious watching BA crawl around the roll bars to get in out of it...

My uncle had an awd Astro van and you wouldn't believe what that thing could go through, snow banks up to the bumper or just about anything. As long as it wasn't off road that thing was amazing.

The coolest vehicle I've ever seen in person was an old Ford Festiva that this guy tubbed out and, moved the firewall way back and put a 460 in it. It wasn't as fast as you would expect such a light car with so much power to be because it just couldn't get much traction but it was still cool as hell.

Just plain fucking awesome! I always liked the idea of modding out a Astro van. I' am surprised that they didn't show a slip from the drag strip, wonder what it will run. Maybe mid 11's ?

I always likes the SHOgun. A festiva with a ford SHO taurus v6 dropped where the back seats use to be. But you could build a quicker festiva with a few parts swapped over from a 323 GTX.

Here is a article on what i am talking about.

Fast Festiva

I knew a guy that put a 440 in a Dodge Caravan.

He also had a pro street Arrow with a 426 Hemi.

There is one in the Ft. Lauderdale area called the "Pro Van" that I saw at the Tower Shops in Plantation years agao.
It was white and set up very similar inside but had a Nitrous bottle between the rear seats and wheelie bars on the back with big slicks.

Most of the people I know who ever had one encountered transmission problems. Didn't they put a light duty car transmission in what was essentially a 1/2 ton frame?

Because the speedometer tells you the top speed?
