Who here has done this?

You know, get rid of calibers you don't shoot that much, or multiple guns in one caliber, or safe queens, or reducing your collection to the guns you must have.

Did you regret doing this?

Why would I do this again?
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:36:55 PM EDT
I clear out stuff now and then, no real organized plan.  I was thinking today, FUCK IT, Im selling it all, the guns, the ammo, the gear, everything.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:37:24 PM EDT
Guns I've gotten rid of:

AUG
FAMAS
M-17S
Clayco AK
Valmet M76
HK-91
HK-94
MAADI AK
Galil
Hungarian AK underfolder
Mossberg Bullpup shotty

*****

They all sounded good on paper but just didn't hold up to AR standards.

The grass is NOT greener on the other side of the hill...

Yippeee! I'm headin' over to the EE to buy summa Taxman's stuff!

I basically am trying to stick with .22, .223, and .308.

Since my back surgery I don't shoot large calibers anyways.

I even went so far as to take pictures today, havent uploaded them.  Need a pre-94 M17? serial in 1300 range?
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:43:55 PM EDT
I like to have more than one rifle in the same calibers...........makes  ammo stockpiling justifying

Its kind of hard to justify 2,500 rounds of one type of ammo when you only have one rifle of the that caliber
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:46:02 PM EDT
i see no reason to really sell any of my guns they aren't worth that much, might as well keep them.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:48:31 PM EDT
I do it all the time.  I try to stick with .45, .308, probably a 7.62x39 in the next year and maybe another 5.56 and thats about it.  Besides the shotty.  I try to stick with guns I shoot alot and get proficient with them.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 9:57:02 PM EDT
if i sold em i'd be stuck calling 911
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 10:01:08 PM EDT
I never sell any of my guns.  Even the ones I don't use anymore.  Ya just never know.

Plus I'm kind of a pack rat anyhow.

I've sold off stuff I had doubles of , and I've sold stuff for
a profit that was too good to pass up .

Guns are like women ... Having just one will usually
get the job done , but eventually it gets boring
shooting only it , and if you get careless they can
kill you

Then theres always the line of thought....

Fear the man with only 1 gun

+1!!

I have done It I use to have 29 rifles at once I have sold 3/4 of them because they took different Ammo and I was having a hard time affording all of the different calibers. I am now down to .308 .223 .45 Even reloading was getting expensive. Another thing I quit buying was Acessorys that will only work with one type of rifle I spent more money on usless crap Now I think it over.

How does one consolidate a 38 and a 10/22?

They seem like handy guns. You might change your mind later. That has happened to me.

That's some collection you got rid of.
I am surprised that the HK stuff didn't work for you.  Or the Galil, for that matter.  What didn't you like about those?

The best policy seems to be to not sell your guns unless you absolutely have to...
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 11:05:49 PM EDT
Right now the XD, SVT40 and the M17 are on my short list of ones to go.
Link Posted: 1/9/2005 11:15:49 PM EDT
I have and I am glad I did. Most of it was crap that I would never use again.
Am trying to stick to just 2 calibers 5.56 and 7.62x39

I am thinking about dumping my 2 AR's and getting two AK-74 type rifles.

KelTech SUB 2K w/ 4 glock mags 9mm version: yours for $300.00 if you want it.  I'll even through in a box of 9mm

That is a good price, but I already have a Beretta CX4, and feel no need to get another 9mm carbine. The CX4 is just for plinking anyway. Sorry.

I've heard of gun shops selling guns.  But I've never heard of an individual selling guns.

[/office space] I believe you'd get your ass kicked for that. [/office space]

I've cleared out a huge portion of my collection.  If it isn't an AR or an M1A/Garand i pretty much got rid of it.....excepting my AR180 and my M96...but I am probably gonna sell the M96 at some point.....but the 44 Auto Mag STAYS!!!

Consolidated mine a couple of years ago into all machineguns/suppressors:
- select-fire 22LR: standard Vector UZI
- select-fire 9MM: standard/mini UZI
- select-fire 45ACP: standard UZI
- select-fire 223: Colt M16-A1/HBAR
- select-fire 308: Beretta BM-59
- suppressed 22LR: Gemtech Hornet
- suppressed 223: Gemtech M4-96D

These are the only firearms I own except for a Kimber Pro-CDP for carry.

I'm not rich, so I usually sold one to finance the next.

There was always something just not good enough about all those rifles.

As for the HK-91, I did not like the sights, it was heavy, and did not group for shit.

The 94 was a 9mm; just not versatile enough.

The Galil weighed as much as an M-1 Garand. And, with the rear sight on the dust cover, just would not keep zero.

The AUG on the other hand was the best of the lot. Had no intention to sell it, but needed the money to pay for college. Yes I miss it...

I have it to a minimum now, got rid of non standard cal. Easier on logistics.
Link Posted: 1/10/2005 9:52:14 PM EDT
I consolidated on 9mm, 45 acp, 45lc, 454 Casull, 22lr, 22wmr.
Rifles 223, 308, 300 Winchster Mag.

Sold a Stainless Walther PPKS in 380...still miss it.
Sold a piece of shit CETME in 308 cause it was a POS
Traded a 40 cal USP for a 9mm USP cause I had a lot of cheap 9mm around.

Any new guns I buy will be in these rounds....unless it's something special.

I did sell some ammo that I had too much of only to sit back and ask myself "WTF!?!?!??!, I would have eventually used it."
Link Posted: 1/11/2005 4:30:08 AM EDT
You folks don't seem to get the idea of a collection if you are parsing it down based on tactical considerations, or on usage.
Link Posted: 1/11/2005 4:36:29 AM EDT
I'm currently selling off a couple of AR15's because I'm buying an NFA UZI. I'll still have 4 AR's when it's all said and done though. Normally, I wouldn't ever consider selling any guns, but the price of NFA toys is going up so fast I wanted to get this one before it went out of reach. I can always replace the semi's later, and they won't cost much more than they do now, if any. YMMV.

Never get rid of a gun, that is unless it is a POS, jam-o-mattic.

guns are like tools,,, you collect them

I try not to buy stuff I don't think I'll keep forever. Especially gun stuff.
Link Posted: 1/11/2005 6:38:01 AM EDT
I have a C&R since I love to collect guns.

I only SHOOT about 4 or 5. The other 40+ sit in safes.

The only firearms I sold were AR-15's - only because I had more than one.

The words "consolidate" and "gun collection" used in the same sentence does not compute. ERROR. DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!

A year or two after I retired my FFL, I tried to do this...

When I found out we were expecting our first child, I tried to do this...

I have come to the conclusion that consolidation of my firearms is not something I will ever be any good at...

I sell/trade one every now and then to a close friend or family member, but the overall number just keeps creeping up.  I have many, many more than I need - but very few with which I want to part.
Link Posted: 1/11/2005 6:52:51 AM EDT

Yes, I do it all the time.  In a sense, I have three collections:

High quality modern firearms (AR, Benelli Tactical, SIG and HK pistols)

WWII Allied small arms (Garand, 1911A1, M1 Carbine, Win 97 trench gun)

And oddball calibers and firearms (CZ52, Glock 10mm, maybe an FN Five seveN soon).

I have had a problem in the past with buying whatever is flashy and catches my eye, such as a Norinco Uzi copy, and finding no real practical use for it after a few fun range sessions.  I have to force myself to buy quality the first time, rather than whatever catches my eye, then replacing it later.

Link Posted: 1/11/2005 7:04:17 AM EDT
I find myself with two rifles for each "Cold War" caliber.  It wasn't planned.  It just kind of worked out that way:

5.56 NATO = Bushy Carbine, SU-16

7.62x39 = Yugo SKS, Arsenal SA-M7(s)

7.62 NATO = CAI "R1A1" on Rhodie lower, Soon (Feb?/March?) to be joined by an LRB M14SA complete build.

My real weakness is ammo.  I keep buying it at a far greater pace than I shoot it.

5.56 NATO = 5,000+ rds IMI M193/M855.   Haven't purchased this stuff in a while.  Anticipated the predicted increased demand for milspec 5.56 fodder and bought as much as I could afford last year from Botach (Yes, a role of the dice, but all I ordered made it to my house.)  No need to tout how good this Israeli-made US milspec ammo is.

7.62 NATO = 3,200+ rds Aussie F4.  Couple crates of the berdan-primed/stripper clip/bando stuff; couple crates of the bubblepack >'91-manuf. boxer-primed stuff.  Incredible ammo.  Still can't believe the Aussies got rid of it.  Realizing the later manufacture ammo is boxer-primed was the icing on the cake.  I may invest in some of the Argie & Spanish .308 milspec just now coming to market so I will be able to horde my Aussie F4 for a little while longer. . .

7.62x39 = 1,500+ rds Uly & Wolf.  I've been using this more often as of late (hence lesser number "in stock") through my Arsenal SA-M7(s).   I've been using the SA-M7 more frequently of late because I  wanted to slow down consumption of M193 through the Bushy.  The SA-M7(s) is an awesome piece of work - you won't regret the additional cost for the quality received in return.
