My harddrive went on my computer yesterday. And deleted everything including my thousands of pictures of outdoors/wildlife and of all the guns I owned over the years

Anyone recommend a cheap but good tower? I'm thinking of dell, as that's what I had and it lasted several years. I'm on a loaned laptop right know and hate typing on them!!

That's cheap enough and capable enough that I'd go that way unless you need something super specialized.

I don't really know how good they are,
but Wal-Mart has 2 models of E-Machines for $298 and $398 IIRC

Every one I have ever seen has been bottom-of-the-barrel junk.  but it's beena few years since I had anything to do with them.  If they're still around, maybe they have improved a bit.

The only thing that's on my screen is the start button, and time. Everything else is deleted. Its coming up with a "Hardrive Error" Thing too. I'm not computer savy, and I asked my friend(Computer smart) he said it could be a virus but I wasn't under anything I should have got a virus from.(Ar15, and eBay at the time)

I won't beat you up for not backing up your valuable pictures, but have you considered a data recovery service?  They are very expensive but it might be worth it to get your pics back.

At the very least, try to run your old hard drive off your new PC (not as a boot drive!) to see what you can recover, if anything.  Supposedly putting a hard drive in a freezer for a bit can sometimes get a dead drive to work again but I've not done it myself.

Pull the hard drive out and attach it as a secondary drive on a good PC.  The data might be fine.  It might just be the OS that's hosed.  If it boots at all, then there is a very good chance that all or most of your data is recoverable.

And if you manage to recover it, make sure you start doing backups.

I don't know if this matters, but I can still access the internet on it via my MSN messenger(Still pops up by my time)? I'm confused by that?

Oh, you're in better shape than I thought.  I was under the assumption that your hard drive was completely dead.  At least you are booting into Windows with that drive.

The good news is that the vast majority of your pics are probably still good, and on the drive.  Despite your pics not coming up as files in Windows, the data is still there; when Windows "deletes" a file, it doesn't wipe all the info from the hard drive.  So the information that constitutes your pictures are probably still resident on your hard drive's platters.

Stop using the drive immediately.  Power down your PC.  Windows (and other processes) will continually read/write in normal operation and you don't want it to over-write any valuable pics that you can save.  See, right now your PC thinks the hard drive space where your pics were formerly resident is now "blank" so it is available for the operating system to write over (e.g. for caching and the like).  You want to stop this process immedately, because it is destroying your pictures.

I'd say take your hard drive out and get to a data recovery expert.  You may have to pay a pretty penny but I believe you will be able to get a good amount of stuff back.

Staples has been running deals on HP towers.   Around 400 for a pretty decent one.  Have your hard drive checked.  Just because it wont boot your computer doesnt mean your photos are deleted.

Your photos are NOT deleted, you've got a particularly nasty virus that fakes hard drive failure to try and scam you into buying phony anti-virus software.

It takes some work to uncover everything, but all your stuff should be there.  Get on a different computer and download copies of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, AVG Antivirus, and read up on how to boot to safe mode and run those.  Also do some googling for "fake hard drive crash virus", that'll lead you to info on how to dig everything out.

Also, stop browsing so much midget scat porn.

What ever you end up buying do not forget to get a external hard drive for the only purpose of "backing yo shit up". Win7 has a built in backup utility but I find it's abilities somewhat limited so I've been using Acronis.
P.S RAID is not a method of data backup. It a method of hardware redundancy to keep you running until you can replace the bad hard drive.

My friend builds all of his and he's got a lot of $$$$ in them. I don't use my computer for awesome stuff so it would be pointless to me.

Yes. Take a few days and learn about it. Get thee to HardOCP, where the owner tests hard drive reliability with a .50BMG round...

I have been there sine 2002, great community, and always need more users and non-vaginal irritation types of geeks.

Even a cheap home brew will be far better in the long run than a WalMart or Best Buy shitbox.

+1

I fix dozens of "Bad Hard Drives" a month only to find out the real problem on 90% of them is simply operator head space.

When you get your new tower, pick up an external HDD also. I back up pictures and documents every other

months and keep in tin the bank safety deposit box.

Thanks.. I was able to fix everything, using my computer. I thought it was strange that I was still able to get onto the internet, and figured it was a virus.

I'm just wondering where I got the virus from?
