Please explain what is so desireable about the preban Colt Green label? Also which model number are they designated. All comments I have heard favor this model in the Colt line up. Please enlighten me.

The best that I could determine when I was researching my Green Label Government Carbine, was that the label color changed according to date of MFG. I found a page with a table and a decent explanation of the labeling. Here's a link:

I have model 6600 green label.  As I understand the blue label '90-'93 added the sear block and removed the bayonet lug to make it more politically correct. I am new to AR's however.  It is probably just more collectable.    

I should add that there are a lot of models that carry the "green label" designation. Some are rarer than others, and worth more than others. I have seen green label models for as little as $1200 and models like my GC, which I sold for $2550.

There are a lot of factors which determine the value, I discovered. My GC was a very early model, serial numbered in the very low 200s, with an A1 receiver.  Because of that, it did command a somewhat higher sale price than a later model, which I have seen for sale at about $2200.

If I held out, I probably could have gotten even more for it. I spoke with a fellow that sold his same model, serial numbered in the low 300s, for $2800.

The best thing to do is to research the particular  model you're looking at. Don't let just the fact that it's a green label make you spend more for the gun than it's worth.

Some "blue labels" don't have the block and do have a bayo lug or just one or the other.

The block is really no big deal as it can be removed and of course you can add a bayo lug to the upper or replace the upper on a "blue label"

During the transition Colt was assembling rifles with whatever they had in their parts bins at the moment.

The "Green Label" designation refers to the identification label on the end of the original Colt box. My R6600 "Green Label" AR has all the sought after preban features that make the liberal gun grabbers so scared-bayonet lug, flash hider, and NO sear block. The 6600 also has the A2 sights and I think was the last Colt which was marked "AR15A2" on the receiver-all later models dropped the "AR15A2" designation in favor of the less threatening "Sporter" designation. I have seen some supposed "Green Label" AR's which did not have the bayonet lug-the owners claimed they were "transition guns" but had no box or documentation to prove it. The only real "Green Label" guns I have personally seen and verified were 6600 models.

I can assure you that the Government Carbine Model 6520 came in a green labeled box. :)
