I'm new to posting but I have lurked for several years and I've read the recommended thousands of threads. I'm trying to avoid the usual abuse handed out to those who don't do their own research etc...

I have a specific question about a rifle that I saw for sale. I have a good feeling for the post-panic market price of a normal Colt 6920, but I saw one advertised for nearly 5x the market price with a heavy barrel under the handguards and LE roll marks. Is the heavy barrel and the LE mark worth that much extra cash?

I saw one for sale at the Mesa gun show yesterday for $3900. I keed you not!
I was shocked it wasn't snapped up within the first 20 minutes of the show opening.

Maybe it's valuable to a collector? I'd rather have a 6920+3,000 rounds of m855+a replacement barrel....

Is that really a 6920 or just a Colt lower with an after market upper, and maybe a colt BCG?

To me? No.

To someone who desperately wants an AR with a horse on it? Probably.

Just after the 2004 ban ended, Colt via Specialized Armament made something like 500 6920HB models.  Each rifle had a "letter of authenticity" with it's number of 500 printed on it.  If I remember correctly, they were originally about $2500, which at the time was about twice the price of a regular 6920.

Not sure why people spent $1200 on a heavy Colt barrel and a LOA, or for a semi-auto with a heavy barrel for that matter, but oh well...

They used to go for what a standard 6920 goes for "right now" $1800-$2000. Now they are full on retardI...saw one priced at $4800? i think?....but, if they get it, more power to them. Capitalist thing and all

Are you referring to the SOCOM 6920?

In a word, no.

The HB barrel model might be a good investment if bought at normal prices, but in this market, with little chance of a near-future ban, you're crazy to buy at panic prices.

If I bought anything now, it would be a 6920 from Wal-Mart. Get up at 0530 every morning for a week, hit them up, you'll probably come home with a regular 6920.

Practically speaking, the only real use for the HB model is high rates of fire (full-auto or lots and lots of semi-auto bump-firing or very shooting-intensive training). That barrel won't be any more accurate than a standard barrel, it will be heavier to carry.....YMMV.

They were $50 more than a regular 6920.  Bought 1 here on AR15 from a dealer right after the ban.  Should have bought two.

Nevermind.

Gracias to all.  I'm thinking that the additional value has to do with the serial # being a 1-of-500 kind of deal. I was surprised because with the handguard in place it looks just like every other 6920 that I've seen. I can understand a normal panic price at 1500-1800 but an ask of 5k seemed extra panicky.
