Do we have any members from that area?  I may be moving there.  I have ?s about real estate, etc.

I guess I oughta cross-post this in the Colorado hometown forum, too.

Adam,

I hate your friggin' guts.

Two days after I started in my new job (which is sending me to Raleigh, NC), I got a phone call from a recruiter about a position in Colorado Springs. I could have KILLED the bastard!

I'd move there in a heartbeat, the existence of the Zoomie School notwithstanding!

I miss Colorado Springs and Colorado in general. Moved away 10 years ago and I still consider it home. It's obviously grown a lot since I moved, but  other than that, most  things are still the same.

Besides the CO forum here, this one has some frequent contributors too.

I don't know anything about real estate, other than the fact that east of Powers Blvd is suburbia run amok.  Anything else, feel free to drop an email (I can't recall if I enabled that, will check when this posts).

10th Group?
Anyway,
I lived there last year and plan on going back after my tour in AK.
Great place, lots of jobs, very conservative.
3 hours to FANTASTIC skiing.
Good range (Dragon Manns)
Nice Skeet, 5 stand and trap range on peterson AFB.
Carson
USAFA.
Downtown is pretty cool.
Some very expensive places to live and some very reasonable.
Depends.
Got kids?  What age?  Where are you going to be working?
traffic can be a bear, but not as bad as bigger cities.
IM me for some more info.

Aerospace engineering, focus on the family, military contracting.  If you have any global comms or space ops experience, you are good to go.  If you still have a TS, you can get a 100K job pretty damn quick.
Check out Ratheon, boeing, Northrop grumman (the missile and aerospace types) if you are interested in more.  Oh, and you could always join a REAL service and go to Carson.

Oy! Be still my heart!

Unfortunately, my TS expired long ago, and I don't have any experience in anything you mentioned. I sent a whole BUNCH of electronic applications to NG, LM, etc., in the state, but didn't hear a peep back.

What, there are Marines in Carson?

3d ACR.

Aieeeya. (we need a Stetson smiley)

Here's the big issue for me.

I am tired of renting and throwing free money (BAH) away.

If I move there, I want to buy property.

Problem is, I will likely spend much of next year and the following in the NTC and Iraq.

I would need to find a nice rock-lawned home or condo/townhouse that an O-3 can afford and is in a nice enough area that I won't have panic attacks about leaving my guns, stereo, etc. there - as long as I know someone could check on the place periodically.

I did the whole "rent, store shit while prepping for deployment, come back and try to get shit back from storage whole everyone else has a home to return to" stuff before - NOT FUN.

Problem is, I have to decide by Sunday night, and will have a report date around 1 December - not much time to react and look for a place.

My other option is Korea - 2ID is overstrength for folks like me, so I would be guaranteed a job down south away from the insanity.

Is that a TS AND experience in that fancy stuff, or just a TS?!?!?!

Got lots of family there, My dad was born and raised there. But alas, I was born in ILLinois.  (the capitals are no mistake, that what this state wil make you), Anyway, make sure to goto rampart road range, if it's still open , not a big range, but it's kinda nice, especialy for a illinoisian like me.

Just a TS will get you that probably.  It is all timing.  The contract comes down and they have to fill ASAP.  So they take a pulse with a TS.
Kids are a big deal if you have any with ages.
Very close to Carson is District 12 (CS real estate is broken down by the school district)
District 12 is probably the best.
District 20 is second, but it is to the north.  long drive.
Carson is the far south.
Falcon is a seperate town just south of Carson.  Some good deals there.
I was in district 49, which is OK, but a pretty far drive.
You definitly want to buy.  I am on my 4th overseas tour and I hate pissing away BAH.
It all depends on the schools and kids.
You can get a great house in District 11, which borders carson, for cheap, but the schools suck.
District 12 will retain/gain value very quickly, but on CPTs pay, a 3 bedroom is about max.  You will get about 1200 a month BAH.  1300 a month got me 2500 square, 2 car garage, nice yard on a golf course, 4 bedroom, rental in district 49.

edited to add,
I am an idiot, had I read closer, I could see you have no family with you.
Definatly district 12 or downtown.  You could get a very nice condo in a great location that will gain value.  I am sorry I don't know a realtor, but I bought my house in Houston with USAA and they did great.  Recommend you go through them.
Hopefully I will see you in a year or two.
Carson is a great tour, lots to see and do.  3rd ACR is better than 4th ID.
When you go to Iraq, see if they will take an Engineer/ADA/Infantry Major who wants in a real unit  Damn guard won't let me out.

Slightly OT....

How DO you get a TS clearance "on your own"? It seems to me it would be a good thing to have in the ol' resume in case something interesting comes up. Do you apply to the FBI or something?

Lived there until 4 years ago for 8 years.  Right close to the dog track on Nevada.  It was great and sucked at the same time.  Mountains and hiking were awesome, traffic SUCKED!!!

3ACR? It's a pretty fucked up unit.  Well at least a few years ago it was.  Run by a bunch of gomers.  But then again it is Ft. Cartoon.  The area around it is pretty nice though.  It almost makes it worth it.  What's your MOS?

From what I was told they cost 125k.  I never saw the reciept so I can't say it for sure.

Oh sorry - I forgot to answer your family question - though I see you were able to determine that from context.

I'm single - no kids to worry about.

I will look into the "District 12" thing - sounds promising.

Downtown sounds nice too - of course, every city is different in that regard.  Right now, I live within a 3 mile walk of three different bars, wiht my curretn regular place jusy 1.8 miles away (those folks even managed to get me singing Karaoke - which I resisted at first but have since learned is a great way to meet women).  I like to have a bar to walk to - would I have that in District 12?  Curse my Irish blood!

Mother of God!

If I had one years back, would it be too difficult to reactivate it?

Can't get a TS on your own.
The ability to get one, or having previously had one goes a long way to.
CS is also a pretty strong college town, lots of good stuff to do.
Carson is quite close to downtown.
District 12 is a residential area, primarily.  so I would lean towards downtown area for the walk to the bar.
Best thing to do is get in touch with USAA and let them hook you up with a buyer's agent.
Have fun.

shitty traffic.

I agree, the traffic is shitty.  But then again, everything is relative.  Whenever I start to feel bad about the traffic here, I drive to Denver.  That fixes things for at least a few weeks.

IM me with other questions.

I've been here for over 20 years now, so that makes me a "native" a couple of times over compared to most everyone else.

I've seen Denver in rush hour. You don't have traffic.
