Despite what you think I can tell you this. A while back the Navy and Coast Guard made some very big interdictions that made little media coverage.  My current job doesn't change the fact that the I grew up in a very bad neighborhood in the LA area, I've been told by drug abusers that the streets "were dry..very dry and nobody can get any right now!" All the while I'm standing there smiling on the inside knowing that our efforts do indeed have an effect because it coincided with major busts.

3. So what? Shitheads will just sniff oven cleaner if they can't get coke. They want to get high, let them. If you really want to end drug abuse, or at least strongly curtail it, stop shipments like this, insert poison into the loads, then let the smugglers continue on unaware, but confused and grateful. After the cokeheads start dying, they will stopp doing it so much.

If our piece of shit country really wanted to win the war on drugs, they would take all of that coke and pile it on every street corner in Miami.  When the price drops to zero--aka free coke for all, the dealers could not give it away and would have to find another line of work.  Limitless drug supplies would sure put a burden on the healthcare system, but I'd rather pay for more doctors not more soldiers.  Think about it.

Simply interdicting little boats and blowing them all to hell sure is fun and self-righteous, but it really doesn't solve anything.  But that's government for you--always eager to bully others, destroy private property, interfere with the free market, and generally fuck things up for everyone so as to ensure that they always get their cut.  

Honestly, government is just organized crime is all it is.  Our beloved Commander is Chief was a coke user and so was his brother.  Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they still are.  The hypocrisy is stultifying!

Edited to add one more thing:  I think the US Govt. cut a deal with the cartels.  The cartels hand them 1 or 2 big shipments each year so that our government can look like it is doing good work and catching the bad guys.  Meanwhile, the actual flow is well protected.

DR. used it on my sinuses years ago.  Liquid, saturate long Q tip and put in nose.  God did the stuff come running out of the sinuses.

Cops stopped a  2 ton truck about 8 yrs ago that rolled a stop light and had a tail light out.  2 Mexican mules heading back to Mexico from Chicago for more coke, had about 1 million or so in cash in the back end that the dog found.
