I must confess that my dillo dust habit has exceeded my income.  I
cannot in good faith continue paying $150+ for each bottle of dillo
dust, even though it does come with some mighty nice optic mounts and
such!

So I have set out to clone Dillo Dust.  Has anyone else tried this?

Any recipes out there?

My homemade stuff so far is a bit on the hot side (evidently the ratio of
cayenne to other spices is a bit high), but it's actually quite good (and I like spicy anyway).  I would like to get something closer to the real deal, though...

ETA: It's a meat rub you can only get by buying cool stuff from Larue Tactical.

Just a rub that comes with many a LaRue order. I'd imagine it's just an amalgamation of salt and spices of a southwestern variety.

I dunno man...The China knock-off "rillow rust" doesn't hold it's flavor and is made from lesser spices. The china stuff might be ok for cheap pork chops, but for any real chef using Grade A cuts of beef, you need to pay the extra money.

I heard somewhere that Cheaper Than Dirt was going to start throwing in some sort of "Dillo Dust" in with their orders.

Just kidding, I can't back that up.

I'll be good for a little while.  Got 4 bottles in reserve.  Eventually, I know I'll have LT-104's stashed in the closet, waist deep.  It's just part of life.

Well I doubt that in the machine shop is a spice grinder.  So, it is likely that he orders it from a place that simply labels it for his business and others.  Find which company he gets it from and there you go.

I have to admit, I love Pappy's,  I even went as far as to make DILLO PAPPY'S................  The Earth stopped rotating while I filled my gizzard with DILLO PAPPY Tri Tip, it was awesome.  But by itself the Dust takes the cake.

Always search for LaRue when you don't know something....

While I love the idea of getting something extra from LaRue (ballcap, tactical beverage opener, Dillo Dust) I laugh at those (mostly yankees)  that believe Dillo Dust is some magical secret powder.
Did yer mamas never season yer food?

As posted above, Lawyry's + sugar = Dillo Dust.

I know. I use it pretty often and I'm still on my first bottle. I have 3 more sitting in the cabinet and another package coming from LaRue this week.

Your tastebuds are clearly dead if you think this.  I've checked the ingredients, this is not the case.

Well, I guess my thread failed.

Here's my parting shot, the recipe I'm using.  It's quite a bit hotter than actual dillo dust, that could be toned down by reducing the amount of Cayenne.  I really like it, though.

2 Tablespoons Sugar

3-3/4 Teaspoons Salt

3-1/4 Teaspoons Paprika

1-3/8 Teaspoons Cayenne Pepper

3/4 Teaspoon Celery Seed

3/4 Teaspoon Garlic

3/4 Teaspoon Cumin
