They are different personas.

John Wayne was a Hero.
Clint Eastwood was a badass.

Are we talking about the "person" or the characters they portrayed on the screen??

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_life_of_Clint_Eastwood:

Eastwood is also a supporter of gun control laws. "I've always supported a certain amount of gun control. I think it's very important that guns don't get in the wrong hands; It's very important to keep them out of the hands of felons or anyone who might be crazy with it.[9]

During the 2008 United States Presidential Election, Eastwood stated that he would be voting for John McCain for President; he has known McCain since 1973.[10] Upon the election of Barack Obama, Eastwood stated "Obama is my president now and I am going to be wishing him the very best because it is what is best for all of us."

Eastwood is wishy washy with a finger in the wind on politics.

I know, you can find anything to bitch about a person (remarks made by John in 1971):

“I believe in white supremacy, until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people....

My vote is for John.

Clint Eastwood.

If would be interesting to see the voter demographics for Eastwood vs the Duke.

My guess,

Over 45 years old - the Duke.

Under 45 years old - Eastwood

You know who that was?  It was Clint Eastwood.

Clint Eastwood doesn't walk with a gay somber.  Sorry I love the Duke but that walk made him look light in the loafers.

I like a lot of Wayne's old movies, but I like more of Clint's. Plus he was easy on the eyes when he was younger, he is still Mr. Cool.

I'm 53 (soon to be 54).

Clint would have shot Duke before he finished talking.

John Wayne does look like he could handle himself in a fist fight better though.

Bruce Dern talked about the fistfight in 'The Cowboys'. He said he couldn't believe how strong John Wayne was. Wayne apparently threw Dern around like a rag doll. Dern said a real fight would have lasted about 2 seconds before Wayne would have beaten him into pulp.

Agreed.  The Shootist was an amazing performance.  Also, Wayne in The Searchers was great.  Of course, Josie Wales was a true bad-to-the bone fed-up dude.

Also, don't forget that cultural differences in the different eras these great actors worked in.  Most of Wayne's career was in an era where the movies were portrayed where the good guy always wins and gets the girl in the end.  Eastwood's career was in a time where the movies were grittier, more true to life in their portrayal of the bad guys.  You'd never see John Wayne up against the Scorpio killer.  However, you'd never see Eastwood paired up with a female lead like Maureen O'Hara.  (hubba hubba)

I support the Arfcom creed of "Get Both!"

Clint but my ABSOLUTE IDOL for Westerns was James Arness in Gunsmoke.

Big man that was as good and decent as they come.

He could have kicked my fat ass with both of his arms tied behind his back.

Plus, I used to fap over Miss Kitty.

Neither (although I'm a fan of both Wayne and Eastwood's acting). Audie Murphy is the answer. Real hero and a bad ass who happened to be an actor. Not an actor who played bad asses and heroes.

Overall, i think it would be Clint, but my favorite western is The Searchers. if you include non-westerns, i think JW wins it, based on movies like They Were Expendable and The Quiet Man. Course, Clint has Dirty Harry and In the Line of Fire, so...

I just aint gonna vote.
