Truly a classic - with a catch: Thoreau was (for most practical purposes) a hermit with nothing to lose and a wealthy benifactor to bail him out of jail, the modern stigma of "have you ever been arrested? yes" did not really apply, and jails there & then were quite tolerable.

The leaders of the American Revolution _truly_ understood "civil disobedience" - all knew they could lose everything, and many did lose a great deal indeed.
