President Jacques Chirac of France stormed out of a European Union summit last night after a French employers' leader said that English was "the language of European business".

The walk-out, seen by Tony Blair, prompted a sheepish exit by the French foreign, finance and Europe ministers and threatened to derail the summit before it had begun.

The meeting had been called to try to fight a wave of "economic nationalism" sweeping the Continent, as France, Spain and other nations seek to erect barriers to cross-border competition.

Mr Chirac's behaviour, in front of two dozen European leaders, was seen as a sign that he and his team were in intensely nationalistic mood.

It emerged that the president's spokesman had gone out his way to inform the press of the incident.

The Phrench absolutely HATE the fact that English is the worlds only 'commecial' language, even the Chinese have made it compulsory in grade school.

I travel a lot in Europe and the ONLY country were I have to use the loacl language is Phrance, pretty much everywhere else English does just fine.

The French are VERY sensitive to things like that. French used to be 'the language of diplomacy' that brought countries together. English is replacing French, though, and the French can be pretty sore about it.

I think some may be missing the point. Is he a pompous jackass...yes, we all know that, but he does have national honor and pride. He is seeing a nation that is losing it's identity and becoming part of a European Union and he doesn't like it, I don't blame him. The EU is one step closer to a NWO, he may be a jackass, but more people with pride and self respect should be walking out of those meetings.

This has nothing to do with the European Union (which incidentally has largely been created in response to French demands and support), and which has never included any plans for a common language (that I am aware of)

This is just about the French being whiny little bitches about the REALITY that English is pretty much established as the common language of commerce and business around the world.
