China's carbon dioxide production soars

Calculate your carbon footprint
China has surpassed the US as the world’s largest producer of carbon dioxide, the most important greenhouse gas.

Surging demand for energy in the world’s most populous nation has lead to a surge in construction of coal-fired power stations, pushing China’s production of CO2 to 6,200m tons of CO2 last year, compared with 5,800m tons from the US.

By comparison, the UK produced about 600m tons, according to research produced for the Dutch government.

The announcement that China tops the league of CO2 emissions by a clear eight per cent comes a number of years earlier than expected.

However, the Government was quick to deny that the news suggests that the West is largely powerless to halt global warming.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) today launched a website to allow individuals to tally up their carbon emissions, according to factors such as their use of personal transport, home appliances and central heating. The Act on CO2 calculator can be found at www.directgov.co.uk.

There are other similar tools on the internet already - such as carboncalculator.com, carbonneutral.com and carbonfootprint.co.uk - although Defra strategists believe that people will be more inclined to believe the figures calculated by an official Government device.

However, skeptics will point out that the figures published by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency reinforce the argument that it is developing nations that have the biggest impact on the climate.

International leaders will be encouraged to intensify efforts to include China in a new climate treaty to succeed the Kyoto protocol when it expires in 2012.

The country didn’t have a national plan for addressing climate change until last month when a government report warned that higher temperatures would lead to worsening droughts and spreading deserts in the country.

However they stopped short of putting economic growth at threat by recommending cuts in greenhouse gas output.

Chinese leaders have pledged to try to develop alternative energy sources, but have repeatedly claimed that nations such as the US and other G8 countries are the most to blame for high gas emissions.

Good idea! They'd be arrested and shot dead on arrival by the communists.

Yes, but our economy is much more efficient. We produce far more wealth per ton of CO2 than the ChiComs.

Wealth is what saves the environment. Human poverty is Mother Nature's worst enemy.

But we need to sign an agreement crippling our economy and placing artificial restrictions on our industry... but China - a "developing nation" can keep fueling their industries by doing things like using R22 and burning high sulfur coal with no smokestack filters...

[libtards] BAD U.S. ... BAD! [/libtards]

And Dupity Dupe!

Isn't that the truth.

old news

China's population breathing produces more CO2 than all US emissions... including us breathing.

Great, we've outsourced our standing as the worlds polluter, and after Algore went to all the trouble of inventing global warming.

I wonder if this will hurt his changes at getting the Nobel prize?

Don’t anyone tell LeDBelly this might disturb his whole stilted view… he would not like that.

The critics only get air time & print space only if it is the fault of the US and GWB Jr, on everything body else they are strangely silent.
