The secret court that facilitates Obama's spying program is stacked with the justice's picks
Defenders of the National Security Agency's sweeping intelligence-gathering operations often turn to a seemingly unassailable argument: Every phone record and every byte of data that the NSA collects has essentially been approved by all three branches of government. That's one of the factors that makes the NSA scandal unique — there is almost zero disagreement within the government itself over the spying program's constitutionality and efficacy.

However, a closer look at the involvement of one of the branches — the judiciary — suggests that this consensus might not be as ironclad as once thought. A report by Charlie Savage at The New York Times reveals that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court — the secret court that decides how far the government can go before its snooping violates the Constitution — may have something of a puppet master: Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court.

Roberts, Savage says, "has been quietly reshaping the secret court" by packing it with Republican-appointed judges, many of whom are former executive branch officials. Critics say Roberts' selections are more likely than other jurists to defer to the government when it says its domestic spying and data-mining are necessary to protect national security.

I think he may actually believe that it's his duty as Chief Justice to assume that all laws are constitutional and then re-interpret them until he can support that conclusion.

Either he is a loon or he knew this would come out eventually, and MAYBE take out Obamacare, once the whole truth is seen.

If people find out that a random facebook post of them smoking the only cigarette of their lives will suddenly be seen by the "minders" and double their insurance rate in perpetuity.... Or if they by too much red meat, or salty foods with their debit card and the "minders" see that does not match with your government doctor's orders...... and you get fined or your rates go up....
Or when your GPS car insurance tracker shows that you drive too fast, that you get tickets AND your health insurance rates get doubled, automatically....

Well, all the support that is left from the people who actually PAY FUCKING TAXES TO SUPPORT THE DAMN THING.....might re-think the whole thing.

ETA:  Either way Roberts is, I hope that my hypothetical holds, and that people wake up and realize they have actually thrown their lives away for "free healthcare".

Damn, you guys should hit the library.  The NSA and agency that proceeded it were conducting counter espionage when your dad was in your grampy's ball sack.  ever send a coded telegram, well they read it before the fucking New Deal.

Church cut their balls off, before that they had practically unlimited power.  Remember the Liberty (you know the jew hater's conspiracy boat), know who ran that?

All 3 branches are involved with the FISC.  I haven't see a day time lawyer with a 800 number yet on FSA tv.  Like asbestos exposure, call 1 800 hurtline to get your NSA settlement.

In other news the CIA still spies and overthrows governments.  news at 11.

The key to curtailing terrorism is good intel and going after suspected terrorists. 99% of every American is not a terrorist. TSA is not stopping terrorism by making you take off your shoes and hats and feeling up your daughters and wives. Nor is collecting every call that every American makes or texts.

We need to be taking some lessons from Mossad and Israel. Maybe even the KGB. Seems some terrorists went after some Russians one time and KGB went and fucked them up so badly, it stopped immediately. We're talking amputations with a chainsaw type of fucked up.

Time to go medieval on their asses. I've been preaching this since the mid 1980's. We need to stop going on apology tours and go on Tango hunting tours. No bag limit.

And that there is the problem, you are operating under the premise that those that use terrorism as a tool are civilized and understand anything other than aborable violence.  The fucks that would like to bomb us, cut off the heads of people in their own country......  My swordfish quote is going to get a lot of use over the next few weeks I sense.

Anyone who impinges on America's freedom. Terrorist states, Stanley. Someone must bring their war to them. They bomb a church, we bomb ten. They hijack a plane, we take out an airport. They execute American tourists, we tactically nuke an entire city. Our job is to make terrorism so horrific that it becomes unthinkable to attack Americans

I am 100% certain that if we had glassed Afghanastain after 09/11 instead of getting into the game of country remodeling, it would have a sent a clear message to the rest of the radicals that we will wipe you out and we wouldn't have nearly the level of issues that we have had over the last few years.  However if the people of this country had intestinal fortitude to do that we would not have shitty RINO's and the Socialist in Chief at the helm right now....

The REAL problem is that its NOT about terrorism. That is the excuse to justify it. Its about what it has always been about. Money. Power. Control. Blackmail.

They missed the Boston Bombers, but they got General Petreaus and Governor Spitzer.

Anybody remember J. Edgar's files?

Money: They will hunt Americans for money anywhere in the world. You can run, but you can't hide.
Power. Anything we can do to keep your political enemies from finding out what we know about you, we will do, congressman. Oh. we need a bigger appropriation in next year's budget.
Blackmail. Resign now, and we will get you a better job later, where you can be of more use to us. And testify against whomever we dislike.

Stop repeating the terrorism bullshit.

Other than stopping FBI stings, I'm not sure that we've ever actually stopped a 'real' terrorist attack.

Regardless, the scary Chinaman or Russian is still no reason to give the government secret courts and extra-constitutional powers. DC is way scarier than Beijeing or Moscow.

I have an issue with using a chainsaw as that response.

See the difference?

I don't have the fortitude to go after someone with a chainsaw. My weapons of choice are rather limited in that area, but equally effective.

The example I pointed out was that somewhere, sometime in an USSR country, a group of middle eastern terrorists did something to a group of USSR citizens. The KGB sent a hit team out and went full retard on them, and I heard that maybe even they did live dissections of the suspects to send a message. The message was received loud and clear, and nobody messed with them again. Either out of fear or respect, and in some places in the world, that equals the same.

Our problem with terrorism is that since the 1970's Jimmy Carter flinched and we are the laughing stock of the world today. The only reason we got our hostages back from Iran was that Ronald Reagan came into office the very next day.

Every time we got attacked overseas during Clinton's reign of terror was he immediately read a statement that the people responsible would be brought to justice, and nothing further would be done. Every single time. Maybe he would shoot a couple of missiles at an aspirin factory.

What do they have to fear from us. Now, Big O goes on an apology tour if we get attacked. Attack us. It doesn't cost them a thing.

Take the gloves off. Make CIA earn their pay for once in their lives. Send out Delta and Dev Group to go hunting. It's what they train for.

I believe that's called "denial."

This.  The idea of a "secret court" is downright creepy and sinister.

That scares the shit out of me. The Republicans and Republican appointees stopped being the party of freedom a long time ago. They've been the party of "law and order no matter the cost" for too long.

Wasn't it revealed that first class mail has been under surveillance for decades? Saw something about it on the news a few weeks ago.

All mail is photographed and data mined. Been that way for years now. You just heard about it a few weeks ago..........

Decades back when your grandpa liked Ike mail was intercepted on large scale.
And John Adams had people arrested for criticizing him in the newspapers.  We should go back to doing that because if it was done before you were born, that means it's the right thing to do.

That has not a damn thing to do with the US government spying on US citizens.

Post tree quoted for a reason.

There's a huge difference between terrorists in action and citizens going about their daily business.
