Since you're talking used, go with the Cherokee. Doesn't have the tranny issues that the G. Ch. have, plus more aftermarket support.

Disclaimer, I haven't owned either. Aunt had a grand cherokee. Friend had a cherokee.

The grand cherokee was a soccer-mom-mobile compared to the cherokee. Cherokee was more utilitarian. (at least the two specific examples I'm familiar with)

Oh, and the Cherokee didn't have a wheel fall off on the highway from broken lug bolts. (which is why the aunt now does not have the grand cherokee anymore, the damaged caused from that accident totalled the vehicle).

I have it on pretty sound authority that the most recent GC is a pile of crap from a reliability standpoint. Don't know about the new one, and the older boxy one was supposed to be excellent (two gens ago). Cherokees one the other hand, no major problems that I know of other than a/c evaporators crap out on almost all of them. I replaced mine myself, it's a bear of a job.

Grand Cherokee: much better suspension (on AND off-road) and a fawkload more comfortabe
