I was out picking up some rocks to use for landscaping today and came across this one.  I found it on land my family owns, and I believe the rock pile I found it in was piled up in the early 1900's.

Anyone know what caused these grooves that are cut into it?  Or the hole through the middle of it?  The grooves are smooth and perfectly worn down. The hole is damn near perfectly straight and goes all the way through it.  In the last photo I put a 5/16" dowel through the hole, but its a little bigger than 5/16".

Ideas what caused this or what it was used for?

Those are drill marks (and hole) from where they blasted a big rock into small rocks.

Looks like blasting drill holes....or maybe the rock was broken up by drilling alone.

They drilled those holes looking for a henway.

Prehistoric pocket pussy. Remember, men were smaller then, and so were their penises, so don't judge too harshly.

Thanks for the reply's so far, I don't know anything about blasting so I didn't even think about that!  Blasting's not to common around my area but it could have been back in those days I suppose.

It's pretty smooth to have been blasted. Maybe eroded from water or ice after blasting

Considering you use to be able to buy dynamite at the hardware store, it was common pretty much everywhere in those days.

I've been surprised in my life how many people think they are the first.  (this new construction is inconveniencing me.  Ya, image what the Indians thought about their convenience.)  It wasn't in my hardware store, but was easy to find and call in the yellow pages.

Jackleg is what I've done for 20 yrs.

But the hole is 1 1/8 inch for the smallest bit.  Blasting holes in general 1 3/8 for jack leg ,  Jumbo 1 7/8

Those holes have a point toward the bottom of the hole and the rock has a few holes together in different directions , not what's normal for a rock breaking pattern, holes are small for charging.

Even a blasting cap is the size diameter of about a ball point pen.

You can rotary hammer drill holes and drive wedges in them to break rock.

Something like this maybe.
