Hi.  Been using prepaid wireless (tracfone, if it matters) for the last 18 months.

It sucks.  The phone is old, the reception is spotty, they nickle & dime, and customer service is helpless.

I need a real phone.

There is a complication.  I ship to basic training in a few months, so I'll be all over the place.

I live in MA.  In a few months, I ship to Lackland, then tech school in Texas for 3-4 months, then language training in CA for a year or so.

1.  Is there any readily available plan that works across the USA without slamming me/without a home vs. roaming area?

2.  What else do I need to look at or for?

My son is at the Naval Academy prep school in Rhode Island.  We live in Texas.  We got a phone here in Texas with our local area code and a nationwide plan and sent it to him up there.  Works great.  Went with Verizon as well.

It's true.  And we're doomed.  I will never knowingly let those m-fers have another penny of my money as long as I live.  Tried Verizon and it didn't work for me, so I'm mucking along with T-Mobile.

I agree Verizon has pretty good service, and you get reception a lot of places.  I also personally like Spring.  I recommend you find out the carrier of the people with whom you spend the most minutes talking, and get the same wireless carrier they have so you can use mobile-to-mobile, or pcs-to-pcs, or whatever their carrier calls it, to talk for free (and free up lots of "regular" minutes for your plan).

He's right. I drive a truck 48 states. Verizon has no roaming charges in the lower 48 states. There are very few dead spots.

I was with Airtouch before the buyout.

I have no roaming, no LD, anywhere I am is home. My service is so consistent, I cancelled my house phone in '00.

ETA: My Sister works for T-Mobile. When we go to our Parents in Kali, she has to use my phone. No signal.

Sprint has been pretty decent - free calls to other Sprint users (wife got a phone at the same time) , with no roaming / LD charges.

Of course, we opted for the "Super bazillion / WTF" plan (I forget the name) with about 2500 minutes, so we're not doing it on the cheap, but it's worked well for us.

Go with Verizon.  Have had it since it's Airtouch days, have service everywhere I have gone (I travel all over for work), and they will do anything to make you happy.  If you call them up to dispute a charge and have even the worst argument in the world, chances are they will drop it anyways.  I've never paid for any roaming I have accumulated.

I am pretty happy with pre-paid.  Wife has Virgin Mobile, I have T-Mobile.  Virgin  Mobile has decent customer service.  Both phones have good coverage and no roaming fees from what I can tell.
