There is a third wee one and mama to catch...

Seriously though, I need a humane way to extinguish their little tiny hearts from beating...

Why kill them? Just let them loose in a field or somewhere else. If you are actually looking for a suggestion.

I have no problem with traps etc, but if you caught some alive why kill them?

I had a rodent issue so I set traps. I noticed over time that the casualties were getting older and eventually young pups that were being forced to fend for themselves. I finally had a tiny one about the size of a quarter caught by its tail in a trap. The poor thing was trying to drag the trap with it. I took pitty on it and put it in a old fish tank with some dog food and water. Over time it became somewhat tame and it lived for over three years.

I am sure the Arfcom view is to take a sledge hammer to them or light them on fire. Maybe you could crush them in your bare hands. It will make you feel real tough.

Car exhaust + hose into closed box = humane.  Make sure you don't do this in your garage.

when I kill mice/rats for my snake I just grab their tail, swing and thump their head on the tile floor... a bit of floppin around and then its dinner time!

Chicks don't like that kind of stuff.  If I wanted to impress chicks I'd make a big deal out of rescuing a fucking mouse.

A big deal like dropping off captured mice when you leave your home?  Life must be really uneventful for you.

Plus it is more than one mouse.  I prefer the term mouses...many who would call me out for that would say mice.

one of our female members used car exhaust once

Link Posted: 6/5/2010 12:06:19 PM EDT

Having had a wetter Spring than usual in Texas, these guys are breeding heavily, and will be overpopulated soon. Best thing is to humanely kill them. I use a pellet pistol. These little cute guys are disease vectors, and carry fleas into your yard/home. If it dries up and they lose their natural forage, they will try to get into your home/ barn/ etc...

Killing them is your best bet. The peta types on here use emotion instead of logic in their thought processes.

Ironically about the same way the holocaust killings started... (box van with exhaust looped into the box...)

I don't think not executing them makes one a sissy, just recognizing life for what it is.

These ideas are disappointingly uncreative,

M80 + superglue = humane? well maybe not

I'm not a mouse though.

I'm not going to share my living space with them.  I live in the country, and as soon as it gets cold, they try to move in.  Mouse droppings everywhere, etc.  Can I send them to live in your house?

What the cat and traps don't kill, I do with my foot.

So emotional yeah  After all it is not uncommon for mice to travel several miles to return to the place where they were born

If you can't find a place out in the country to release them then either shoot them with a .22 rat shot round or get something big, wide, and heavy and smash them.  If you go with smashing make sure you get something really heavy that will actually flatten the cranium in an instant.  Of course a 12 gauge with bird shot would be what I'd use because that's what I have ready and available.

Typical peta comment, did you ever think that maybe hauling them up the road and turning them loose makes them someone else's problem? Do you throw trash out of your car window on the highway too?

Try researching these vermin, google is nearby. Dazzle me with your logic, after educating yourself. Your emotional efforts aren't working.

Take them to a nice field and feed the birds.

Hawks for example will become your friend.

Extreme example-the rough scaled python at Reptile Gardens in SD. One of less than twenty to ever be captured, and the only one in the world to be outside of Australia. Imagine the price asked if a specimen legally entered the pet trade. Less extreme is the albino ball python-When I was keeping snakes in 2000, they were selling for as much as $7500 from Bob Clark. Now they're more like $1000. Still an expensive pet to risk disease to save spending $1.75 on a mouse to feed it.

Take them to a retail/ grocery store and liberate them....a restaurant, perhaps, where you have had poor service? Be creative. life is short.

Don't wild snakes eat wild mice, which may have a desease, and live? Do pet snakes not have a good immunity system?

Not trying to be a smart ass, just actually curious.

I'm sure the snakes have great immune systems but the way evolution works...things are only designed to live until their offspring can survive.  I'm sure lots of animals die of random shit out the in the middle of the woods with no one to give a fuck or thing about it.

I thought I read somewhere that crocodiles immune systems could kill HIV.

When we finally got mouse traps in via the mail system into my COP in the 'stan, I personally killed about 40 mice nonstop over the course of a couple days.  They ceased to be a problem after that.

Until we got complacent and removed the traps....a month or two later...many more mice.

I could bait 4 traps, leave for guard duty and they would all be sprung when I got back 1 hour later.  Hell one was set off about 20 seconds after I placed it, I just sat down and heard it snap shut.

Honestly man the car exhaust thing is your best bet if you don't want to feel like you are 'shooting fish in a barrel'.  Shooting with ratshot is cool and all, but not particularly sporting if they are stuck in a box.  IMHO it takes all the excitement out of the 'hunt'.
Link Posted: 6/5/2010 3:23:45 PM EDT
I usually use sticky traps.  I then take them out back, give them a blindfold and a cig, then pop them in the head with a pellet rifle.  They appreciate the nice touches like that.
