Will Caseless ammo ever make a comeback?

Seems to be a good idea on first glance. Reduce the weight of the round by removing the casing. Less weight per round more rounds you can carry.


I suspect we could do it now without all the issues that the HK had.

Came up not too long ago on here, and IIRC the main issue in the discussion was heat. Most folks don't realize how much heat the casings help "extract" from the firearm.

yeah having rounds cook off prematurely would be a really bad thing

They're working on it. I can't seem to find it, but I remember an article about the caseless ammunition used in the program. Something about the difficulty in getting a good chamber seal and the large amounts of smoke the weapon made.

I have to admit I thought it was a cool concept.

Wouldn't want a small arms type like that but it looked like potential for area protection.
