Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter delivered a shocker at an American University panel in Washington Monday. There is "no doubt in my mind that Gore won the election," the erstwhile President declared, saying the 2000 election process "failed abysmally." He also snubbed the Supreme Court for getting involved, saying it was "highly partisan."

* 7.8% unemployment (ended at 7.5%)
* 15% mortgage interest rates
* 70% top marginal income tax rate
* 14+% poverty rate
* He formed the Dept. of Education = entrenching the Teachers Union in the Federal Gov't.
* The 1979 "oil crisis" and more gas lines.
* He told America to wear sweaters, turn down the heater to 68 and just do more with less from now on.
* In his infamous "malaise" speech he actually blamed the American people for the nation's "paralysis and stagnation and drift".
* He awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom to Roger Baldwin, the self-avowed Communist and founder of the ACLU.
* He ran a whopping 23% approval rating during 1980 campaign.
* He lost in a 489 to 49 Electoral landslide for Reagan and Republican control of the Senate in 1980. (Thank God!!)

FOREIGN AFFAIRS -
* Gave us 444 days of non-stop world-wide humiliation as our impotent and ineffectual President during the Iran-Hostage debacle.
* Approved a poorly planned and botched "rescue" that only added to America's humilation around the world.
* Watched detente crumble with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
* Pulled out of the 1980 Olympics - for spite.
* Gave away the Panama Canal.
* Never did explain that mysterious $250,000 payment from Libya to his brother Billy.
* Allowed three countries to fall to communism under his watch: Benin, Nicaragua, and Zimbabwe.
* Oh yeah... he was there when Sadat and Begin shook hands.

Jimmy Carter also favored:
* Equal Rights Amendment
* National Health Insurance
* SALT II missile treaty
* Unilateral disarmament

I still cringe everytime my 80 year old "southern" democrat Grandmother says Carter and Clinton were the best presidents we ever had. I guess its that old FDR depression thinking. It still amazes me everytime I hear an old southerner say they vote democrat because that is what they have always done. Most of them would be repulsed if they actually knew what the SCOTUS judges Clinton nominated stood for (Ginsburg and Breyer).

I got to deal with his mess he left our military forces in when I enlisted in 1982. We were still cleaning up and building up from his cuts and gouges in the military.

I was issued and older M16A1 with a 3 prong flash hider and the upper and lower were so worn, they had like 1/8th inch of play and the upper moved like a half inch side to side at the rear sight. I still scored Expert with a perfect score in the freezing rain during the winter at Benning with it.

Reading that list that Mac put up really raised my BP through the roof.

I was a Flight Instructor in '79. I was teaching around 6 hours A DAY until the shit hit the fan and the economy went into meltdown. Within *weeks* starting in 1980 my student load dropped to 6 hours A WEEK (if I was really lucky - it was usually lower). I didn't have enough hours to move on to something else and left aviation as a career path that spring.

Discretionary income simply vanished almost overnight and with it, so did my students. The entire General Aviation industry, which was at an all-time high, damn near vanished off the face of the earth within a year. For those of you too young to remember it was an UGLY, UGLY time.

Regardless of what you think of individual politicians, you have to admit that our voting system as it currently stands is badly broken. The electronic voting machines that are FULL of security holes and leave no paper trail are especially offensive.
