Single story house, Ceiling joists running front to rear of house. We want a 6' sliding patio door on exterior side wall. Doubled 2X8, 2X10, 2X12? How many trimmers, 1 or 2 on each side? In case you're wondering, we are talking about replacing an existing slider but the header looks pretty small to me.

2 by 10's are fine. If you have 3 1/2" walls, nail 1/2" plywood between the 2 by 10's. One jack stud under each end is standard for that situation.

2x10 with a spacer, and 1 cripple(jack stud) per side is fine.

So goes my dilemma: 2 say 2X10 w/ 1 jack stud 1 says 2X10 w/ 2 jack studs Oh well, I'm not in front of it right now if my memory serves, I remember them being only about 2X8's...

I guess your answer lies with 2x10s with ply in between and one cripple stud per side is fine, 2 is better if it can fit easily enough. What is code in your area?
