I get so sick of their disgusting commercials. They portray regular hospitals etc. has uncaring douchebags.
There is no way that they have anything special that other hospitals don't have. Sounds to me like they specialize in telling people there is hope when there is none and getting them to empty their bank accounts on top of draining whatever insurance money they can get.
Now, many cancers are not a death sentence. In these cases I guess they specialize in being "More Caring"? than a regular hospital. Not so sure how they work that angle.

Where I work we take care of people that range from very famous and wealthy to totally indigent illegal aliens. I bet if you show up at Cancer Treatment Centers of America with your medicaid card or heaven forbid, no insurance, you will get about as much compassion as a red headed step child a week before payday.

Rant terminated.

wife's an oncologist. i have observed that some people who get cancer don't trust the local docs and think it's some mysterious deal that can only be dealt with out of state or with unusual treatments. cancer treatment centers of america fits the bill perfectly for them. of course it's certainly understandable they are freaking out. my neighbor who got cancer swore they had an herbal cure in korea.

Some of the "stories" they portray seem pretty absurd.

Like the woman reiterating to us the time she was coming out of anesthesia, and the doctor tells her she has cancer then walks out of the room. Something tells me a real oncologist would not have the beside manner of a bent shitcan.

I have cancer, I can't stand those fucking commercials. I especially can't stand the one with the lady who supposedly had Pancreatic Cancer, for her to be a real survivor she is one of the luckest people on the face of the planet, that commercial itself told me it was a scam. They definitely are NOT like St. Judes, I can't watch those either but for entirely different reasons.

My local Oncology clinic has been OUTSTANDING, everyone knows me by first name and truly cares about my condition/treatment. They watch me like a hawk, I have a nurse who personally looks over me, she is a truly an ANGEL (farking dust in my eyes)!!!!

Most don't know, I nearly expired 3 weeks ago but I am rebounded back as I am too damn ornery to give up. It doesn't take much to go from being ok to death's door in a hurry, I got put on a new treatment as my initial treatment no longer works. Well the 2nd treatment almost wiped out my bone marrow and left me dependent on blood/platelet transfusions and virtually no immune systems. Well, after 2 months of that shit and a hospital stay, I am starting to rebound. I am on a better chemo I think, it seems to be doing something and my blood counts have shown very noticeable improvement. Multiple Myeloma is the suck!!!!

Don't worry about those capitalist pigs at cancer treatment, now that we've got obummercare, they'll be bankrupt in no time and everyone no matter how hard they work to get ahead can get the same shitty socialist medical care.

A very good friend of mine has pancreatic cancer and the fucksticks that are treating him tell him he's doing wonderful, but yet tell his son that his dad is terminal with stage IV cancer.

He's been in and out of the damn hospital for innumnerable reasons since his diagnosis, but the fucking doctors tell him he's doing great.

I guess you get what you pay for (he's on Medicare)...

that's a two edged sword. Mental outlook is important for enjoying what little life you may have left. What do you want them to do? Give him a shovel and tell him to get busy before he gets too weak to dig his own grave?

Unfortunately, it has been my experience of observation at the Cancer clinic that anyone who gets diagnosed with Pancreatic and Small Cell Lung Cancers have been given a death sentence and they don't have much time left as they both are brutally quick and painful. Not much anyone can do but try to treat them nicely, it wears on the Doc's because they basically cannot do anything. Most Oncologists I know love their work and love it when they can treat the patient's cancer and they got the treatments working. When they have a cancer that won't respond, there are some no one can do a thing too, they get depressed, they are human and oncology is one of those fields that can really rip out a persons soul.

I know a guy who went to one. He said it was 10x better than the hospital he started at. He said from the very minute you walked in the door they had you believing you can survive.

He did eventually succumb to the cancer, but I guess that hope was worth it for him.

I got the flu a couple of weeks ago, and had to go to the ER. After they started pumping fluids and antibiotics in me the 103 fever broke and I wanted to go home, but I my white cell count was only .83 and the ER doc would only let me go if I signed an AMA. One of the nurses in the oncology ward came down before I could AMA and talked me into staying. This was at 0300. I told her I would stay on my terms. My terms were, no plug and play IV, and I wanted to leave in the morning after the doc had seen me. The doc was the on call doc, and she would not let me go unless I signed an AMA. Well, the nurse talked me into staying one more day, until my doc came in.

I am sorry to hear that you have Cancer but I hope you will win the Battle and become as survivor.

Trashing this place with absolutley no evidence is wrong, just because your skeptical of their commercials

A private hospital that wants to get paid, Horrible

And yes a lot of elitist prick specialized doctors have a terrible morbid bedside manner.

It struck me as a place where you might receive some less than traditiional treatments, maybe even cutting edge
that your local guy may not be up on yet. Also treating the spiritual side which you may not get at a public hospital.
Im sure they take indigent cases probably by referals like a lot of private hospitals do.

I have no personal experience with this place either but it looked like a place I may take me or my wife if I
was faced with a you have ...... to live diagnosis.

And it's a very effective commercial, because it is true. If they do provide a kind and caring environment like they advertise then good for them. They deserve to make lots of money doing something for their customers that most of the others in the field won't do.z

Thanks, your in a similar boat to me as you also have a blood cancer, the flu is bad news for us with blood cancers. I will likely get flu shots this week, I am well enough to get them and my doc does NOT want me getting the flu. Most Myeloma patients die from pneumonia due to weakened immune systems and not directly from the cancer.

My stay at the hospital wasn't too bad, had a great time with the nurses and my oncology docs, I just had a issue with some other docs putting me on low sodium diet and not knowing me also trying to fuck with the meds I was on like my blood pressure/beta blocker. My oncologist ripped a few assholes during my stay, she told the fucksticks not to touch any of my meds as either she prescribed them to me or as in my heart meds one of the top 5 cardiolists in the State prescribed it and it WORKS!!!! I love her and she is easy on the eyes!!!!

I am lucky as I have never been sick until this. As a matter of fact, my last compete physical, when I was 40, the doc said I was healthy as someone in their mid 20s, and the only meds I am on are coumadin, because I got a blood clot in my left lung at the end of my first 6 months of chemo, and allopurinol because the doc does not want me to get gout, and bactrim so I don't get pneumonia.

I forgot, they did give me two pints of blood, and platelets when I went in, and I am lucky there too, as I am AB+, the universal recipient.

I was doing pretty well until I got put on a new treatment, the treatment about did me in not the cancer. Oh well, you just got to take everything a day at a time and fight like hell. I just got to get my Cancer count down in my Marrow and then my brother is coming down to for a stem cell transplant, I hit the lottery in that my brother is a match for me, then my brother's marrow cells will go on mission of wiping out my marrow and cancer cells.

Same here. Girlfriend is an oncologist and every time she sees the commercials she says its a huge scam that preys on people who don't receive a favorable diagnoses or don't believe that everything is being done to treat them. When you are ill and could be staring death in the face, any alternative sounds like a great idea and this is exactly the tactic these places use.

She says its alot like what some lawyers do. You go to one lawyer, pay him for his work and he says you have a shitty case and there's no way anyone can win it. You don't like the answer and go to another lawyer telling him what the last one told you. This one takes your money and tries the same shitty case. And the cycle keeps going.

come on! Kick its ass!

ETA: when my shit went down I ended up going to OHSU in oregon.. and was part of a study group. for a new type of treatment.. With local doc's id be dead..

I am waiting on my brother to be tested, and they need this stuff going down before they can put me in the little room.

I did a Autologous stem cell transplant a year ago but it failed, my brother hadn't been tested yet and at the time it looked like a good fit. Now I really need to do the transplant with my brother, it is the closest thing to a cure for my cancer and particular the other blood cancers like yours too.

What is amazing is from what I learned from my first transplant is how far science/medicine has gotten on the stem cell/bone marrow transplants. My cousin died of Leukemia in the 70's (death sentence in those days), he died from host vs graft disease where the donors cells completely take over and attack the body. Now, they have almost got it down to a complete science, the docs actually encourage some host vs graft action and have it go out to destroy the cancer ruthlessly. My other oncologist at Northside Hospital in Atlanta specializes in this process, this guy is brilliant, one of those kind of individuals that you instantly can point out and just know that has "more degrees than dates" and anything he says or does has been "tested". He can tell you what your blood counts will look like at say day 10 and they WILL BE what he quotes you (virtually every damn count too and that is about 20 or so counts)!!!!!

Good luck.

My cancer rant doesn't have to do with that hospital, but while my mom had stage 4 breast cancer, her PCP nagged her to get a colonoscopy done because "she was due." Really?? Really?

Well, after 2 months of that shit and a hospital stay, I am starting to rebound. damn dude, i had no idea.

Treatment of cancer, and other things like that, ARE one thing I support "universal" health care for...

If it wasn't for all the fucking Bariatric fucks (so fat they need a hospital to take care of them) and other stupid shit, they would have a lot more money to go to people (and places) that need it...

How many people can come up with tens, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars at the drop of a hat for cancer? If you're paying for your whole life through taxes, THAT is one thing I consider reasonable, but again this is just my opinion, so please take it as such!

I always found the commercials annoying and "scammish"

However, I have treated two patients recently who were under treatment at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, and they had nothing but good to say about their experiences. Furthermore, when attempting to contact their personal oncologists, I found them to be very responsive, knowledgeable, and caring toward their patients.

I have never had cancer, but I see patients all the time who have it or whose lives are affected by it. It would seem to me that SOME hope is better than NO hope. In addition, even with a dismal prognosis, I would think that people would rather be treated with hope and caring, rather than being treated like a test subject or an experiment.

My opinion of CTCA has therefore changed a little. Although when my Father in Law came down with myelodyspastic syndrome, I sent him to MD Anderson.

Here's a critique of the Centers.

They seem to mix Science with not so much Science.

I did NOT like the way they acted. Was way to orchestrated and "too good to be true". I got the feeling it was the same treatment we got in Atlanta, just with CTCA window-dressing.

Good rant.

I agree that their ads are very insulting to health care professionals and providers.

I also tend to agree that they probably don't have anything to offer patients that are not available elsewhere.

Please propose an alternative to paying for medical care that is sustainable.
