[Last Edit: 7/22/2008 5:53:03 AM EST by DisplayName]
I'm visiting a friend and while I used to be able to just take the cord out of her DSL modem and plug it into my lap top to go on line now I get a IP conflict. I have XP Pro.

Any suggestions?

Restart the modem (unplug for i minute) and router if you have one. It locks on to the IP of the initial machine and has to assign a new one to the laptop I suspect.

That didn't work, IE Gateway Diagnostic says "There is no default gateway entry(ies)"

The gateway entry is 0.0.0.0 She has Vista.

open a command prompt
type at the prompt

C:\> ipconfig /renew all

try that first

I did that and got the message "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation."

The other commands didn't work either.

Is that on your laptop? cause that means your NIC is busted, disabled, wireless turned off, something like that.

I fixed it by doing a system restore to the last time I was here (April) and it wasn't to painful.

Thanks for the help.
