I'm finding my self doing more and more work on my own AR's and think it is time for an upper receiver vice block to help hold the gun so I can work on it. I think a lower mag block would be nice too. I'm currently using a oak floor board I carved to fit LOL. Thanks for any help!

I just ordered the Magpul BEV block. I have no experience with it so I'm hoping it's good to go. It looks like it will be pretty good.

Where's the best place to buy an actual vise to use with these blocks? I'd like a tabletop version that isn't too pricey, if something like that is made. But I only need one for working on stripped lowers. Would I be better off to try to find one online or just get one of the hobby vises from Wal-Mart?

I have one of the Wheeler ones:

I like the bolt carrier insert and barrel nut alignment checker.  The downside is it is made in China and only fits normal forged uppers.  Midway has them on sale for $20 at the moment.

I have the same style clamshell clamp but my bolt carrier insert doesn't have the barrel nut alignment piece. That's cool. And $20 is a good price.

I've been pleased with the Brownells clam shell style block.

Is there one that will fit all AR15 uppers? I have a Colt, Sabre, LMT, Aero Precision, Noveske  and was hoping to buy one to fit them all. Thanks!

As long as their forged receivers they'll fit the clamshells. A billet receiver will likely need something different.

How do you tell the difference?

Billet type receivers, are those big bulky ones with the racey lines to them. See if the arfstore has any listed. They used to sell some.

Colt, Stag, Bushmaster, Armalite, etc. are all forged. So are most of the ones you asked about but I'm not familiar with their entire product lines to be sure.
