The bullets seam to fit in the revolver but that doesn't mean it will be safe.  So can you safely shoot 9X19 in a 357 magnum?

I would not try unless it was life or death...

Probably not, since 9mm doesn't have a rim to hold the round in the correct position with the firing pin.

As a designated ammo r&d tech, I did try loading 95gr 9mm (.355) BULLETS into .357 mag brass. They worked ok, but the optimum velocity/fpe combiniation appears to be the standard 125gr .38 (.357) bullets.

I'd hazard a guess that it would not blow up since the round can move back enough to exposed the thin part of the casing.  No way I'd try it, though.
Did you put one in and it fit all the way into the cylinder?  If so, what kept it from sliding all the way to the end?
If one was to try this and got the round to fire, how would you remove the case from the chamber afterwards?  Got a stick handy?  When I shoot full power loads (winchester silvertip), those cases do not fall out of the cylinder by themselves.

BTW fearlessrogue,  All goals in your sig have been accomplished [:D]

I think Imbroglio means 38 special brass.  ".38 and a 10/22, that's all."

Well since I just happen to be setting here with both 9mm and a s&w 357 mag.

I tried inserting the 9mm roung into the cylinder and the cartridge wouldn't slide all the way in and I wasn't going to try and force it. But if you did force it, there might be enough friction once forced into the cylinder that the round would go off. I cant see the pressure of a 9mm being any problem for a 357 mag revolver.

Ruger makes a revolver with interchageable cylinders one in .357mag and one in 9mm.  I wouldn't put a 9mm into a .357 cylinder though.  I have a Ruger Vacquero with .45lc and .45acp cylinders.

you need a 9mm cylinder and a half or full moon clip.

Before Y2K I read an article by a gun writer (Wiley Clapp?) who stated that a .357 was an ideal SHTF gun because it would fire 38 Specials, 357 magnums and (in a pinch) if you wrapped a piece of wire around the extractor slot, 9mm.  Of course this would be only in a life or death situation.   Also, if you try this and get injured, maimed, or dead, you didn't hear this from me ....

Oh hell yeah! My buddy, "nubby" used to do stuff like that all the time. Like the time he stuffed an arrow down the barrel of a .410 and shot it at steel plate. Or the time he stoked a black powder rifle with cordite and red dot. That glass eye almost looks real on him.

Manufacturers do extensive testing on their firearms. They stamp what it likes to eat right on the barrel. Read it, heed it.

I have a dim memory from the late 80s early 90s of a SHTF revolver that shot all that and more.

I recall the buzz was that it sucked.

Anyone else remember it?

Remember this the nine mil is .380 ,that .380x17,or .380x18,or .380x19!

Not .357  I don't know if the nine is .380 or not but it is defiantly bigger than the .357!

So the same math apples as the nine mil is more like 39 cal than it is 38 cal!  A thirty eight S&W would be closer to a nine mil than a 38 special!     Edited to say I can put a 45 long colt in my rugar no#1 45/70 and it will fit just fine,do i want to fire it?

   Don't do it!     Bob [:D]

The 9x19mm is actually .355" in diameter, not .380."

You are so right as I just tryed to put the 9x19 in my colt six shooter and the bullet was no prob but the case size does make it a no-no!

dont have a 357 to test the theory however 9mm=.355 and .357=.357 and .38 = .357 and .44= .429 the .38 and .44 nomenclature comes from way back before mass produced ammo, the bullet was the same size as the outside of the brass case(much like current .22 lr) the bullet size was reduced to faciltate ease of manufacture IIRC. the only problem would be chamber size and the fact that the 9mm is rimless.

Wasn't there a revolver call something like the "Medusa" that was made a few years ago, that claimed to somehow chamber and safely shoot 380ACP, 9MM, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, etc.?

Me thinks Willy Clapp (har, har) was FOS.  We've already determined that a 9mm won't go all the way into a 357 cylinder.  Even if it did, the wire around the groove would cause it to stick out the back about .025" too far.  It takes a lot less than that to lock up my cylinder and I've got one of them crappy loose tolerance brazillian guns.

Makes for good writin' though.

Yea I remember the ad, the tried to sell it as a fancy mans pistol with a lit cigar and ferrari keys next to the pistol.  It claimed to shoot all that.

In the last issue of American Handgunner Magazine the showed the shell casings of some ammo that was put into the wrong gun.  The cases are all blown out and ruptued down the side.

Either you are on crack, talking out yer ass, or your reloading manual is from MARS:

380 ACP = 9X17 : fmj bullet diameter is .355
9mm luger = 9X19 : fmj bullet diameter is .355
9mm makarov = 9x18 : fmjbullet diameter is .365
38 special and 357 mag: fmj is .357

and for the 45's:
45 acp  bullet diameter is .451 fmj bullet
45 long colt shoots fmj .452
45-70 =     FMJ  .458

when shooting lead projectiles, sometime diameter increases by .001 to .002 of an inch.

BOTTOM line is if your firearm is not specifically designed for it, DONT SHOOT IT.

In weapons designed to fire 2 different sized rounds, like the ruger 357/9mm convertible. The accuracy of the smaller diameter round is usually lacking.

The answer to your question is YES.

BUT .... you have to get a cylinder conversion for it.  There is a company (forgot which) that will take a SW 686 and maching a cylender to use moon clips so that one can fire 'rimless'.  That is, you swap out the .357 Mag cylinder, put the new one in and you can fire: 9mm Luger, 38 Super, 9x23 Win.  Bascially anything that is .355" to .357"... If it can fit in the cylender w/ the moon clips, you can shoot it.  I was thinking of getting my 686 converted.  I will at some point, but it cost $300 to convert your current cylender... more if you want an extra cylender for swaping (so you can keep the .357 Mag ability)

So, yes.  The little bit of differnce .355" vs .357" isn't an issue.

Yes sir, my bad, 1000 pardons.

Many folks also confuse the 9x18 makarov to be a short 9X19, it just aint so. Shorter round, but bigger diameter

[:D]  Next time you'll only get 999.
That's a fact I did not know about the makarov.  Good info there.  Thanks.

No actually I had a P-63 9x18 Mak,about 39 cal just a little bigger than a 9x19!

And when you talk about 45 cal ,please don't talk bullet weights talk case lengths!

That's what I was talking about!

Bob, I was talking about bullet diameters, not case lengths or bullet weights.

Your 9X18 makarov is .365 caliber. If you are talking case lengths, it is a bit shorter than the 9x19, about 1mm

I'm sorry If I seemed disrespectful, I really did not mean to SEXUALLY OFFEND anyone.
