what is it?

I hate staring at photos because I keep thinking it's gonna be one of those that does something to scare the shit outta me.

Well I see what looks like a  barrel sticking out above the guy on the left's right shoulder.  Is that it?  The third face between them... but I assume that is supposed to be there.   WTF man?  If I keep staring at this and some face or little woman pops up to scare the shit outta me after that huge Thanksgiving dinner I had, I'm gonna be pissed.

The guy with the the M16 has no mag pouces? His rifle is set to "auto"? He's carrying a towel. He's in the field with his sleeves up? No helmet?

The guy in the centre looks lost and unarmed? Also no helmet?

Somebody went and bronzed three of our soldiers?

I dunno. What?

The M16's selector switch is set at full auto?

Even if it's not what you're talking about that's a "flaw" I've noticed before.

Yeah but remember... *wiggles trigger finger*... this is my safety.

In Vietnam it was common for soldiers/Marines to go without helmets or to roll thier sleeves up.  It's not just Hollywood BS.  Granted, the guy in the middle has no weapon and looks lost... medic maybe?

That M16A1 has a A2 birdcage flashhider.

And

The background looks like washington d.c. or maybe n.y.c. but not veitnam.

Yeah, I know it Cypher, I was just brainstorming. I keep thinking it's either one of those things where some vampire's going to jump out and scream at me so I shit my pants or if I stare at it long enough it's going to be 3d or something.

In any case it's probably going to be something so obvious I'm going to beat my head on a wall for not noticing it before, like maybe when I was there. Oh well.

Oh, and actually THIS (points at head) is your first saftey. [;)] Without common sense, NO mechanical safety or trigger discipline is going to be worth fly spit.

On the left side of the picture, over the right shoulder of the medic, LT, whatever he is... that looks like an M60 barrel.  I say M60 because of the apparent bipod.  Or was that photoshopped in?

Oh, and halfway up that tree to the immediate right of the guy holding the M16, it looks a lot like some kind of 4 legged, semi-transparent, demon, phantasm climbing up the tree.  I KNEW IT!! I knew there had to be something there to scare the shit outta me.  Damn demons.

How can you tell it's an A2 flash hider?  There were plenty of A1 flash hiders that had ports all the way around.  The only real difference between the A1 and A2 was the lack of ports on the underside of the hider.  Not all A1's had a three prong FH.

Looks like the black guy with the M16 and the LT are holding hands.

First thing I noticed was that the M16 was on AUTO. Stock looks a little funny, too.

They're standing too close.

Looks pretty accurate to me.

We live about sixty miles south and visit the memorial about once a year.  Actually, I sort of like going alone.  Whenever I take the missus (or anyone else for that matter except another Vietnam vet...) they sort of get bored and don't really understand why I have to see it...again.  I take my time, taking it all in.  I go through the book, looking up those guys I knew that are still there...then visit the wall and the three grunts.  Then the nurse and her casualty.  Too me it all is important...but to those who never served...well...they just don't understand...and that's OK too...which is why I prefer to go alone.

For those of you who have not had the pleasure, I highly recommend it.  Then just walk up the grand steps of the Lincoln Monument.  You will come away changed...I guarantee it.

Ahhhhh... the warm glow of victory.

Actually I agree with Garandman on this one. Defects or no, it's holy ground.

I have often wondered, largely due to that sculpture, how lax some things were in Vietnam? I wasn't there, but I've been in combat more times than I might have liked but have not seen any soldiers that laid back. Forthought to wear a flakvest but NO ONE thought to wear a helmet? I mean, I reliaze some of it's symolic and all. Maybe it's actually better the way it is, but I wondered also if maybe that is a picture in time, so to speak. I dunno. Maybe I'm just thinking too much. After all, no one told me to think.

I do know I'd rather wear my K-pot for a week than my flakvest for a day. Man those things are uncomfortable!

And thanks again for not posting one of those screaming things. Those get me EVERY time, even when I KNOW it's coming. lol

Trippy, I took this pic in SEP99.

We must have stood in exactly the same place.  I noticed the selector setting then, it was the reason for the close up.

Ditto on the sacred ground sentiment.

As for the "A2 birdcage flash hider" you can see the slots in the suppressor go all the way around.

What is wrong is the dangerous situation.
The gun is low and it points to everyone who visits.
Someone may get shot someday and since the selector is on auto it may be a massacer.

you know that gun is VERY detailed, too detailed.  Somebody should paint the flash hider orange just in case somebody cuts the gun off of the hand and thinks he can use it to rob the local 7/11
