I have a Goal Zero solar charger with a battery pack that has a USB output.  Is there anyway to get power to a laptop through the USB?

I didn't think it was that hilarious of a question.  I realize it's GD, but I figured there were more IT folks here than in the survival forum.  When the power went out, I decided for fun I would go strictly sustainable power vs. generator power.  My inverter setup failed entirely (which needs to be addressed), but I was left with plenty of fully charged AA, AAA and cr123, but no means of playing my DVD when the laptop died.   In a situation like this, is there a way to power a laptop?  Right now I have lots of relevant info on digital medium that would be very useful in a true SHTF.

I don't think so...

Which Goal Zero? Like it? Hows the charge speed?

USB is 5v. What does your laptop charger say under output?

You can run them on the little cigarette lighter inverters.

You can run 2.5 watts over a USB cable (500mA@5VDC).   A laptop generally pulls 15-60 Watts, and their battery's are charged at a much higher voltage than 5 volts.   To sum it up, not a chance in hell.

Not any sort of modern laptop.  Max USB power is 2.0 Amps @ 5 Volts.  2x5 = 10 Watts.

My netbook power supply puts out 30 Watts, or 3 times the amount of power a full-spec USB port can provide.  Some tablets will charge off USB, and some tablets have an external USB A socket that you could plug an external DVD into.

There are some rechargeable battery chargers that will charge NiMH AA batteries off USB.  If you gang 10 NiMH batteries, you'd have 12.5 volts, which would run a 12V car inverter - for a short time.  Using multiple gangs of 10 NiMH batteries, you could power a laptop.

Per USB 2 specs, max current for a device is .5 amps.   .9 amps for USB 3.

Thanks for the correction.  It would appear, however, there are 10W USB power supplies on the market for high draw tablets & MiFi devices.

What other output does the GoalZero have?

Some of them have 12v out, and you should be able to adapt that.

There's a great thread on this in the survival gear forum.

Looks like I'm SOL unless I want to rig up some batteries in series.   No complaints on the Goal Zero.  It fully charged up 4 AA batteries and my blackberry in ~2.5 hours.  This was late in the day too.   I think I set it up around 5pm.  For such a portable device, it will work great for powering optics, flashlights and radios.

Yup.   Not sure how much power an iPad charger puts out, but it is more than 2.5 Watts.

Even 12 volts won't be enough... unless you're running some kind of step-up "transformer".  (Which, btw, wouldn't readily exist. Not practical for DC voltage, since it's not really a transformer, but a solid state voltage multiplier.) Most laptops, you'll find, are powered off of 19 volt, DC supplies.

You could use a solar panel. at least during daylight...
The  smaller 85 watt and 60 watt modules make 21 volts, open circ uit....  plenty enough to heat up a laptop battery.

Ah, that is correct. I was thinking of stepping down to charge something else.

Protip:

Most (decent) laptops have a feature where if they are provided 12 volts, they will still operate but the battery won't charge.  This is by design due to the ubiquity of 12 volt power sources.

Makes sense.    All of the hardware is going to operate at 12 or 5 volts.

Get one of these. Charge it via the solar panel, then use it to charge your laptop battery. Throw a 12v deep cycle battery in there and you're golden.

Fascinating - will have to try that w/ older laptop.

It works great with my netbook.
