Yeah, but I wouldn't have been for the last 6 months or so.  But by budgeting, planning, cutting back and living even more parsimoniously than usual, now I have a $1000+ surplus while paying down my debt's principal by $1000/month on top of interest.
Unbelievable, I know

If you don't even have $1000 in cash as a backup, you probably ought to be living on beans and rice, drinking tapwater, and using 56k until you do.

YOu cant make it to work if your fucking car breaks and you don't have money to fix it.  Not that hard to save 1k even when you are poor.

I carry a shitload of cash on my person.  I almost never use cash, I use credit cards.  Mostly I use credit cards to irritate the Ramsey people on ar15.com and listen to them tell me that I am a bank slave and I am living month to month and my lifestyle is unsustainable and I am making the banks rich and I am a retard.  If it wasn't so fucking entertaining, and I didn't want the points I *guess* I'd use a debit card but come on where is the fun in that?

I keep between $400-$600 on my person at all times.

I've probably had the same exact wad of cash on me for the past 6 months.  I think I've tipped a few valets but other than that the money doesn't come out I use plastic.

So why carry so much cash?

Because cash solves problems.  Cash gets shit done.  And sometimes, cash gets you an awesome discount.  It doesn't happen very often, but there have been enough times in my life that I was able to start peeling off $20's (or the odd $100) to just make this "problem" go away.

Sounds like small potatoes to some, but it's a big accomplishment-and worthy of praise-when you turn a lifestyle around and start going forward financially. I think changing your spending habits is as hard as quitting any other addiction.

Same here, but it has diminished because I bought some silver. In the 2 or 3 years since I took it out of the bank, money is visibly buying less than it did originally. I've never been a precious metals guy but I reasoned that money's value is definitely going down, while silver only MAY go down.

No I could not. I'm working on changing that but as of this moment I can't.

But working part time at home depot doesn't exactly give you a lot of surplus.

Before someone says anything yeah I am looking for better employment. But it's always easier to get a job if you have a job.

had over $3K in savings then wifes mother called begging for money for rent and utils, wife can't say no.

Its not happening again, if the woman needs a place to live, shes welcome in my house anytime, but I'm not a fucking ATM.

This plus my wife losing hours at work due to off season, means theres about $300 right now in there.

ETA: I don't even want to talk about Christmas coming up, I figure after this year, kids don't get jack, but the wife doesn't agree, so thats $500 for shit they will destroy in 1 or 2 weeks.

Your wife knows where your money stash is? I can understand that people want to trust their wives with everything important in life but if she's prone to bad decision she shouldn't have the ability to access that money.

Not telling you how to run a marriage, but life might be easier if she knew less about your emergency stash..

Yes.  About 3 months of pay in savings, and about the same in Silver.

I've been through some bad times in the past and know to save for a rainy day and unseen circumstances.

Just put 400 into my truck last week, and was glad I didn't have to worry.

It is, and I normally don't live so close to the bone.  But I decided to tackle a big debt last November.  I decided to take a mild risk and push my normal emergency and investment fund to paying down the nagging debt ASAP to get rid of it instead of just financing it, and then pay taxes on top of that.  For the last 6 months or so, I had about $300 in my bank account at most, but I knew as long as I stuck with my budget, after July I would have more than $1000 on tap, as well as meeting all my expenses, plus addressing my debt plus interest.

I have gotten numerous items cheap before because I could give um cash now instead of them waiting a hour for someone else to go to the bank

Me too...

I have $300 in cash at home (in a vacuum foodsaver bag), the rest is in the bank.  That reminds me, I need another $200 in cash at home ...eventually raising it to $1000....

Just barely, right now. But I always keep a few thousand dollars in the bank as a cushion for emergencies.

Recently had to use it for some emergency dental work, so I'm a bit slim the past week or so.

I was shocked that my wife just mentioned to me we should have some cash stashed at the house in case
of emergencies and we decided on $1000.

I am always trying to be prepared but I NEVER thought she would get on my side with this.

We have a few weeks of food and water stashed, maybe she is realizing that shit is getting serious in the world.

If the bank was open, sure, but I honestly don't think 30% of my friends could. The cost of living is brutally high here and most do literally live from paycheck to paycheck and spend summers working to pay up last winter's fuel bill that's sitting on a credit card. That's life in modern day American for you though.
