Do you think at this time (perhaps for the last several years) the NSA or other government institution can double click your name, social etc. and see everything you are doing online and double-click your phone number and tap into your telephone conversations?

I would safely guess yes.

ETA: I also meant whatever websites you are surfing, your bank transactions, youtube, facebook, twitter, purchases, etc. ANYTHING you do online.
Link Posted: 9/8/2013 4:07:14 PM EDT
I think they could listen on your phone or access the camera on it whenever it is turned on. They can also see and listen in on your webcam on your laptop.
Link Posted: 9/8/2013 4:09:41 PM EDT
I heard that they do have the capability to turn on the microphone or camera on your phone and go through your data.

I also heard that the IRS theoretically could target organizations based on their political leanings.

Thankfully these things will never be abused.

Phone sex and fwapping 24/7 a day.  Keeps me busy and the NSA occupied.

I wonder if they have everything filed and categorized?  Can they just pull you up to see where you've been.  Say they look on Tuesday and see that mongo's watching porn and cruising ARFCOM again, like clockwork.
Link Posted: 9/8/2013 5:08:04 PM EDT
I think they probably have something similar to CRM (customer relationship management software) on steroids.  At least if I was a tyrant and control freak, I'd design access to everything regarding that citizen based on SS number. Each SS number would have a main profile and links to all "interactions" with that "customer".

Hell - 15 years ago a company I worked for had a state of the art CRM system. If you called, we knew it was you and pulled up your file before the call was answered. Each call was recorded. We knew every thing we'd ever sent you, every offer, every person you spoke with at the company, (could with some effort pull the recorded conversation) and we could profile you based on supplied data and predict if and when you would buy or products.  As the information grew our accuracy in purchase projections got better.

I can only imagine that with all the info available today in real time, and with the inexpensive cost to store it all -  that you could build a very powerful, predictive database - that just so happens to document your electronic life. Think of it as a personal portal to all info about you. It might not be at a single users fingertips, but it most certainly could be tied together.

But it's a good thing we don't have to really worry about that, cause we should trust the people who keep us safe and all.

It would be if you have a webcam hooked up. Most new laptops have them integrated and yes, it would also work on tablets.

it is anything with a camera/microphone and wifi or the ability to pick up and or transmit information. Ole David Petraus said he can spy on you through anything with a wifi connection. small cameras, microphones and  wireless information systems like wifi/cellular bands is dirt cheap. before long when you watch TV, TV will be watching you.

opps I have said to much the miniluvs is at my door.

Oh really? If this chump can do it, don't you think agencies do this? http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/story/20059405/2012/11/09/how-easy-is-it-to-hack-into-a-webcam

It's just software that controls the video and audio. It is easy to manipulate if you are in control of the device.

Now on IMacs at least the indicator light is powered by the same wire that powers the webcam. It is an analog function of a power cord. You can not hack an IMac webcam without that little light coming on. So that helps I guess. Won't stop the mic though.

Well the NSA has tons of data on dudes watching porn...which is exactly what they want. Pornography is a government ploy to make sure that the population doesn't get feisty and take down tyrants.

Today's options: Take down oppressive overreaching government or fap again to that squeaker Lexi Belle. I know what I'm doing.

When was the last time you saw Syrian porn? You see what happens?

Assume everything you use electronic that sends or receives info is compromised.  Trick is not standing out, they have a lot of garbage data to sort through.

Yup, this.  I keep a piece of tape over my webcam on my laptop.  I never use it anyway.  I keep the volume levels all the way down.  Don't know how much it helps.  If they want to listen/watch me, then there gonna end up eating their own gun after a while as I'm about as boring as they come.   Make no mistake about it though, if you consider yourself a "Patriot" then your already marked and have probably been looked into at some level.

Try this one then...
http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424127887323997004578641993388259674-lMyQjAxMTAzMDAwMTEwNDEyWj.html

The FBI develops some hacking tools internally and purchases others from the private sector. With such technology, the bureau can remotely activate the microphones in phones running Google Inc.'s GOOG +0.00% Android software to record conversations, one former U.S. official said. It can do the same to microphones in laptops without the user knowing, the person said. Google declined to comment.

Earlier this year, a federal warrant application in a Texas identity-theft case sought to use software to extract files and covertly take photos using a computer's camera, according to court documents.

So your claim is that because some unnamed individual said some LE agency might have done something once, they have full access to every machine everywhere on the planet? That's ludicrous.

And now you're changing your argument again...

ELINT is mainly for RADAR's and Electronic Warfare type of things. If yo want to jam the cell signals or otherwise mess with it in some way then you are dealing more with the ELINT side. Cell phone cameras and phone mic's along with computer cams and mics have been able to be activated for a while. Anything that has a power source and is connected to some type of networkis available for grabs. Call me paranoid but the fact that you can't take the battery out of an iphone is just another reason I hate those damn things!!

I really don't know what your arguing against here. The OP asked "can they", I said "They could". I have not edited any of my posts and have stated the same thing all the way through. My argument is that with the right amount of skill and equipment, someone can hack into a persons computer, phone, tablet or laptop with integrated camera and microphone and manipulate them to take pictures and or listen to audio. This can be done easily through malware. There have been people charged with doing this. The government is more than capable of doing more than most individuals. NSA has given sketchy answers in the past when being questioned about their abilities and activity in this realm. They give a lot of non answers.

Do I think they are looking at all of us? Every machine in the world? No. I do think they are looking at some of us though. Do I think they are doing this without a warrant or probable cause? I don't know.

The OP asked "can they".....I think they can. I don't know if they do it regularly, but I am sure they have the capability. I believe I have been consistent in my posts, perhaps you can show me where I changed my argument.

That's actually not at all what the OP asked.

And you used an example of a situation where an IT director decided to install malware on all the computers he controlled in order to use the microphone and cameras on them, showing that you have no idea the scope of the problem you're arguing is possible.

Nobody can just install malware on all my computers.
