Can somebody explain "the projects" to me?

they named some large number of residents from "the projects" that were being evacuated after the flood
I have seen some of them on "Cops" or in the news sometimes
they are suppossed to be real dangerous for non-residents

I have heard of them in Chicago, Philadelphia and now New Orleans

Are they ONLY for welfare recipients, can anyone rent there, is it what we call section 8 in Houston?
(where taxpayers pay like 80% of their rent)

I am wondering if we will start building "projects" in Texas to house the LA transplants
and, what happened to welfare reform, are some people still going on welfare their whole lives?

Short for housing projects. The "projects" are .gov housing for low income families.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 6:14:59 PM EDT
Tribal bullshit, you wouldn't understand.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 6:15:06 PM EDT
"projects" are typically fully subsidized housing that is owned by the locality. (eg the Dallas Housing Authority)

Section 8 and LIHTC is usually owned by private developers/owners
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 6:15:07 PM EDT
Government housing.

Low income or no income rent for families based upon financial need.

Basically if you can't take care of yourself and earn your own money they stick you ass in a project. Projects SUCK.

Usually only families qualify.

It is public housing for welfare receipents. A lot of druggies live there. Gang ruled. The bottom of the barrel. Blocks and blocks of apartments. When I lived in NOLA, no white person went near them

It's the fuckin ghetto.....government produces it....no right-minded person, poor or otherwise would choose it if it didn't exist. It's a warehouse for the poor.

There are generations of people that have been living on welfare. Why change now.
Are you familiar with a small animal called a leech? We humans have our own version of that.

Projects are housing paid for by the oppressors for the poor victims to whom it's owed.

I'm all for helping folks out, regardless of race. Problem is, gov't handout produce obnoxious "consumers" more often than not. Charity should be done on a local level with some common sense. What a joke we've become. It's sad, really sad.

section 8's are a good investment, just keep the heat on and the water running.
The gubmint sends the rent checks directly to u. They also pay for repairs if the people fuck up the house.

Contact McUZI--he'll make up all the statistics you care to digest.

The Projects: democraps, liberals, socialism, blacks, illegal aliens, local/state/federal 'gubment housing, shoddy workmanship, few jobs, smells bad, drugs, prostitutes, gangs, lack of maintanance, lousy tenants, bad management, rats, whiners, welfare, and eventually torn down so that capitalism can revitalize the neighborhood.

Projects are inhabited by income challenged people. They get free rent for a while, then uncle sam makes them work. This work consists of a minimum of 20 hrs a week so they can sstay in the projects. My wife works with a bunch of these people that work 20 hrs a week. They call in sick repeatedly and generally are a pain in the ass to work with.

Bottom line is they don't want to work.

Electricity is paid,as well as various other things. The only thing we(Taxpayers) don't pay for is cable tv.Rent is around $200 a month and most of them drive better cars than I do.Toilet paper, paper towels, soap and other necessities are given to them as well.

I live less than a mile from this cesspool of human filth.I see them drive to the end of my street with hookers and crack, then leave. They leave their used rubbers on the ground, along with vials and syringes.

Let's just say a "project", in the context of this thread, is something that you want to stay away from at night.

My dad sometimes works at an asphalt plant located across from a Housing Project in Chicago. Good thing he doesn't work there at night.

wanna see projects, come over to my house and look across the street. When we flooded a couple of years ago, I was trapped in my house for a week with water all around my house, they started coming over here, a couple of the townhomes were broken into, none by me. Im afraid of what would happen if I was cut off any longer than that.

Build new projects? Not much of that going on anymore. Most projects are being torn down. The "poor" are moving into other privately owned, subsized housing or they are getting a section 8
subsidy so they can live in regular nighborhoods. (perhaps coming to a hood near you)
On welfare their whole lives?? It's worse than that! There are 3rd and 4th generations of families that have never had a working person in their household! No resident male in the house, mother just keeps downloading crumbsnachers. Female children start to breed at age 14 or 15 years old.

I beg to differ as I worked those high rise projects you talk about for many years, and still work in the low rises...............while they did implode those all the "family" low rise complex’s, the family low rises are for the most part still standing....and according to the rate where going for this year, there contributing their part to making damn near 300 homicides in the city of Baltimore this year....though a unfortunate side effect of "move to opportunity" as it is called, is the re-distribution of scum in the nicer neighborhoods surrounding the city, but dont feel bad there are still plenty of shitbags still in the city to make everyone feel good about their socialist agenda......funny im feeling a little homesick…I miss the stench of piss and S---t covered stairwells and having to run all 15 stories up to the top all the time………….ah……………….

Yeah, usually. Bastards keep propping this shit up in my area, I live in a suburban town called Elkridge in MD, and they keep trying to do this here to house all the people from NYC and Baltimore, it really sucks to have this stuff popping up around you. If you don't go to the inner city, why then, the inner city will come to you ETA: they've actually been taking existing housing, even single-family homes in some cases, and using them for this.

Plenty of caucasians and hispanics on welfare too. I think it has to do with the environment an individual is raised in more than race. Unfortunately the poor/uneducated/destitute of all races do not take advantage of birth control so the cycle is endless. Drugs, alcohol and popular culture do not help the mix of those who cannot or will not help themselves. I fear it will only get worse as the world's population increases exponentially.

It should be no suprise that because we have more white people in the USA, more white citzens are on state aid. They may not live in projects but sec 8 pays the rent. Also, being poor is not a crime. If your not poor consider yourself lucky because you could have drawn a different card in life.

Plus, we bailout more corporations owned by millionaires with your tax dollars but you guy's instead talk about a $400.00 per month check someone might get from the gov, what about the billions in corporate welfare. You don't complain because either you don't know about it or don't see it across the street.

Wake up, the rich love when the middle class get's absorbed with what poor peoples get for free.

We spend tax payer money rebuilding Iraq and young men (kids of NO) dying for it and we have to ask for donations for US citizens! Something is wrong!

Can you provide some sources for those numbers about the racial breakdown of welfare
are you just quoting figures that "everyone knows"? I cannot find them, where did you get them?

I don't know if I am up for a debate on class envy or corporate welfare but If the figure of
300,000 people on welfare in NO is correct they are sucking down much more than the
12million a month that they would be getting in a $400 check(rent, food stamps, medical care)
And that is just ONE city

If they CAN'T work, fine, no problem, if they are sitting on their asses instead of working because
they don't feel like it and are contributing to the problems in society by committing crimes, not fine

And when you bring up Iraq, are you saying that the Taxpayers should pay for everything
via the federal government, and Churches and Charities should not need to help?

Troy, I can't speak for that lost soul you know but how you say "it's not race " but then say that blacks think that they would be a traitor to their race if they work hard. Believe it or not but that is a racist statement. Who the hell told you that? This forum seems to think that blacks are the only people on state and federal aid. That black people are poor, lazy, uneducated and predatory. Come out of the dark.
As far as Iraq, take donations for that. Why am I paying for that and $3.54 per gallon for gas.

Also, this forum assumes that all those people are unemployeed or on state aid prior to this event. The projects also house low income people who are not on state aid. They are just low income earners. I would take a shot also and say that maybe, just maybe some of the people might have lost a house and or business in the storm. Who the hell knowes but to generalize and stereotype continues the divide.

"However, the cold hard truth is that blacks use and abuse the welfare system at a far higher percentage of their overall population than do other races. It is not politically correct to say that, but it is true".

Troy, we have to agree to disagree with the above. Maybe in CA but in CT for instance you have a lot of non blacks living in towns intermingled in the suburbs, in some cases in cottages on the lake on sec 8 as their parents were. Now I will say that the cost of living varies state to state and in CT where the cost of living is very high, I think that plays a big part in the diversity of federal assistance citizens in towns out side of urban/metro areas here. I do know that in rural areas around the country, ie, NH, you have had generations on hard times that are on the system up there and they are not black.

Im thinking that the cost of living in CA is up there compared to the minimum wage so maybe that's why you say the above.

It's funny seeing someone ask what "the projects" are. Geowing up just outside of Chicago, "the projects" are something that are talked about almost daily. There not really for poor people. I'd tell each and everyone one of you who really lives in projects and what outrageous animals they are but the site staff seems to get awful upset when I speak the truth about certain Chicago folk.

Imagine what you are seeing on tv right now caged in a concrete urban jungle, swelling, waiting to explode.

We won't work down there because they piss down the elevator shafts and defecate in the halls. I was offered demo work at Robert Taylor and promptly rejected.

The Chicago PD don't even go there on New Years eve. They let them shoot it out and kill each other and then they scoop 'em up in the morning. What I see on tv right suprises me in no way given where I grew up. I am just now happy I am McHenry County IL white trash. Aint no lootin here.

This website says some interesting things about welfare reform
like........some states are exempt, some have not reached the cut-off yet(LA, TX)
and the states can exempt 20% of their rolls from the cut-off?
