Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Can anybody explain the trend towards

bells and beeps on electronic/mechanical devices that are high pitched enough to be painful?  Cell phones, two way radioes, elevator bells, modems, etc.  Yes, I know high sounds seem to cut through noise better, but is there a way to cut down on the headache inducing piercing shrieks, especially when there is no pressing need for it?

I barely notice them. (Too much shooting w/o earplugs?)

But they really bother my wife.

FWIW, I feel EXACTLY the same way!  It's like incessant noise pollution----which the environmental extremists would hop on that as an issue. I even get sick and tired of listening to the 'dinging' which occurs when I leave my keys in the car.
