If I want to go to the range on my bike, would it be considered concealed carry even if my gun is in a softshell case?

In Illinois? I think you would have the SWAT team on your ass right quick, and a press conference from Barak O'bama right afterwards.

Try your hometown forum for state laws.

I think they'd felony stop you on your bike.

Make sure you get a copy of the PD video for us to see!

ETA....

I think there's prolly some proviosion about transporting ammo seprately from the weapon in lots of states, so there'd be another hurdle to figure out.

Would it be different on a motorcycle? Technically, would it need to be a locked case?

In IL, generally you would be within the law.

You must:

Have a FOID card
Have the gun enclosed in some sort of case
Have the gun unloaded

It really depends on where you are though. That would be OK for me, but if you are in Cook County you may get some attention.

But the case has pouches for the magazines, the zipper could be locked.

There are no ammo storage restrictions except that it can't be IN the gun
There are no locked box requirements
There are no trunk requirements

The wildlife code is a bit stricter, so don't hunt.

Just do it........ nobody will even notice.

I used to take guns to the range while on a motorcycle when I lived in IL. It was central IL though.

Just do it and see what happens. Will definitely keep tailgaters off your rear fender.

Like people have already said...

Have a valid FOID card
Put it in an enclosed case
The case does not have to be locked
Your ammo can be in mags IN THE CASE, just not in the gun
You won't be breaking any STATE laws.

In CA I rode around in my truck with my SKS and mini 14 with a 40rd mag in the gun rack. People would give you some a weird look but no one honked at me the entire time, i time i wasn't paying attention and I was sitting there at a green light for a few seconds and no one dared lay on the horn...

Dang. Here in Utah county I know of at least one teenager who'd sling a rifle over his shoulder and take off on his four wheeler down the street through a lot of the neighborhood before heading into the hills. Never been a problem.

Would get you stopped for something in Austin, but think it is legal in Texas.

wear MARPAT, they'll never see you

I guess my question is: How in hell can you carry enough ammo on motorcycle to make a trip to the range worthwhile?

From TrickyVic's range trip check list:

Rear bumper draging due to weight of guns and ammo? --- CHECK!

I don't know, but it sounds like a bad idea. I think you should borrow a car for your trip to the range.

In TX,you can strap it on your back and go. Simple as that.

VA has open carry, and no "assault weapon" laws unless you actually commit a crime with a rifle with more than 21 rounds in the mag at the time (I *think* I got that right), but if I rode down the street on a bike with an AR draped over my shoulder, I don't think I'd get more than 2 or 3 blocks down the road before all hell broke loose. I'm smack dab in the middle of soccer mom country, and I doubt anyone within a 5 block radius from me has ever even seen an AR in person. Well, except for the guy I got my Garand from

I would imagine that depending where you're at in IL, you'd have the same reaction, even if it WAS legal.
