What is your question?
Are you asking if you can install the SAME copy of XP pro on the same network? Or are you asking if 2 different copies of XP pro can reside on the same network? |

Yes technically you can without problems, although legally you aren't supposed to.

i'm pretty sure it's the first question and i'm pretty sure you can do it. xp freaks out after the third install. not totally sure they won't flip out when they see each other on the network, but since it's legal to install the same version on your desktop and your laptop and those could be on the same network, it should go ok. |

Many professional and corporate versions of XP don't have a key. I've done it all the time.

I've had 6 pc's running on my network at home at the same time. Sharing files, printers, etc. I do use a 'volume license' and a 'volume' version, but I do not know if that matters.

Guys,
The standard versions of Home and Professional require a call to MS to activate. The Volume License version (i.e., "Corp Edition") does not require activation, but you won't find this version at CompUSA... -Troy |

XP for the masses has copy protection that marries a copy to a specific machine.
There are corporate versions that install using a serial number like older version of Windoze does. Those can be installed on multiple machines but cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. |

Depends on the key...
If you have a key that came with a retail box version or with a PC, you will have to go through the 'Product Activation'  , and the copy can only be used once...If you hvae a 'corporate' license key, you can skip activation and install on as many boxes as you want (but if MS catches you without enough licenses...). |

If you have a RETAIL copy of XP the answer is NO. At least not legally… The retail version of XP contacts Microsoft after installation to “Activate” your XP machine it then locks that copy of XP to that machine. If you the install on a second machine when second computer contacts Microsoft it will not allow you to “Active” on the second computer and after 3 days it will not run. I suspect that Microsoft dumps their XP “Activation” database every 3-6 months. I have seen someone install the retail copy of XP on a second computer 3 months after the first and MS let the second computer “Activate”. If you make major changes to the hardware on a activated computer the machine will sometimes ask you reactivate. |

This customer at my shop said he used a key reader/gen software to install XP on several computers. I'm not sure which version of XP he had though.

He had the Volume License addition. All versions require a CD Key (which is what the Key Gen creates) to install, but the retail & OEM versions additionally require Activation that the Volume License addition does not. -Troy |

So there are THREE flavors of XP?
1) home 2) Pro 3) Volume License (with win98 type CD key) My copy of XP Pro says it's optional to register and I have a 20 character CD key, but its labeled XP Pro. |

No, there are 2 'workstation' versions of XP: Home and Pro. However, there are 2 varieties of 'Pro' CD key. Corporate/Volume and Retail. If you use a retail key, you get the activation screen. If you use a 'corporate' key, XP recognizes this and doesn't make you activate. It's the same code, just different keys... Office XP is the same way... |
