They scrub rocket launches for fairly small chances of bad weather.  Completely different situation, but it made me wonder what happens if nuclear war breaks out as a severe thunderstorm is over several missile silos.  Can they still launch ICBMs reliably?

I think most are launched from submarines now.  Maybe the submarine could go find nicer waters?

Yes.

I'm no expert, but deciding to launch ICBMs against targets would have to be doable regardless of something like the weather.

Even if 70 mph winds, large hail, or even a tornado was near it?  Seems like it could cause it to be errant and completely miss it's target.

We aren't talking about an unguided projectile like a bullet.  The missile itself can make pretty massive in-flight corrections to its trajectory, and the warheads are maneuverable as well.  Even if every missile didn't work perfectly, there is a reason we launch more than one.

No, no, no.  Didn't you know World war III was actually scheduled for last week, but cancelled due to rain?

I would think that rain would get the wick wet.

I remember our directives after launch in the 80s. We were to go to each LF in our flight area and count how many launched.

You don't exactly have to be accurate down to a few meters when you are using multiple nuclear warheads...

That is why have so many. Redundancy.

And remember these things were designed to be launched even if the ground above them was scorched by a soviet bombardment.

In a word, yes. The "birds" will fly.

Absolutely not. Thus the millions of dollars spent on the Halliburton Weather Machine.

The CEP of the Peacekeeper and MMIIIs would make one go

Not to mention multiple layers.

Highly unlikely that all the various missile silos, missile subs, and B2 bombers would be unable to deploy nukes because of weather.

Due to the mutual destruction doctorine that was a common theme of the cold war, I would say yes. You can't make Ivan wait for perfect weather to launch his nukes so you can launch yours.

I would imagine if it was a real concern both us and the russians wouldn't of built our missile fields in places that get blizzards 4 out of the 12 months.

What you talkin' bout 4? Apparently you've never been to the missile field in Wyoming. There's a reason why we have to carry a survival kit from September to May.
