It seems like just yesterday Basic Instinct came out and now we've gotten pretty vivid in what can pass with a R rating.

Could hollywood go any further at this point with what they can show?

Hopefully, usually to keep an R rating the chicks grow huge bushes.

hollywood has pulled back a lot from nudity.  there used to be much more back in the 80's, 90's but the most sought after rating now is PG-13 . going up to R cuts the prospective audience too much.  this is why almost all recent horror movies suck so badly

In Europe, nudity is no big  deal.

Why is America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, so damned puritanical about a simple thing such as exposed skin?

I don't see why they consider female breasts showing as "nudity"???

If you REALLY want to see boundaries on nudity being pushed, go watch an episode of "Spartacus: <Fill in the blank>".

We are not "puritanical".
There are nice sweet animated kids movies and there are also full on bukkake gang bangs and DP.
There is also everything in between to meet every taste and market demand.

Does every movie have to show tits and ass?
What ever happened to story?

My favorite recent example is Inception.
It was a great story and very entertaining. It had action, drama, intrigue, suspense and character development.
All without gratuitous violence, no foul language and no nudity or sex scenes. Just the compelling depiction of a good story.

Would that movie have been made better with some random sex scene or tiity shot, just because? No.

But if you want full on penetration and money shots, you can go out and get that to. To each is own.

I find the rating system confusing. One movie dealing with war, history and a few war scenes (nothing overly graphic) get's an R rating. Another movie depciting, kidnapping, sexual slavery, froced drug use, rape, prositution, murder, bondage, etc. gets a PG-13.

Seems odd to me.

See what I don't get is you can show people getting graphically murdered by the truckload on prime time TV but a nipple causes a national crisis.

Titanic had a fully nude scene in it and it was PG-13 or Cameron would have cried.

There's a very interesting documentary on the commission that rates movies, and how they are completely inconsistent.
"This Film is Not Yet Rated"

I'd link to the Wiki page or IMDB, but the cover has a bum on it, and I guess that's against the CoC

I watched The American this weekend. For those who haven't seen it, there's about 5 minutes of softcore pr0n in it.

I would disagree with the OP, I think female nudity is more rare than it used to be. Many Hollywood actresses are more willing to be photographed on nude beaches over appearing topless in a movie.

Male nudity? It is at an all time high in mainstream hollywood movies.

female nudity maybe, but you sure see a lot more dude butts and even franks-n-beans in movies these days.

For example, take The Hangover. No hot T&A scenes - just some crazy naked Asian guy.

As someone has already pointed out, there was a lot more nudity in films back in the 80's.  I'm sure that its relative absence in today's films has much more to do with the religion of political correctness more than it has to do with a resurgence of traditional morality.

Nudity?

Am I missing it?  IIRC as a kid there was a whole lot more nudity in films, well atleast in the 80's.  The 90's pretty much was the end of nudity in films(you can count the nudity on 2 hands).  So now its having a comeback?  Am I missing it?

They should be able to, but they can't.  It's just a movie.

Nudity is just that, sex is just sex.  I'm more offended by some of the other boundary pushing that goes on in hollywierd, but in those instances I just choose to not watch them.  (brokeback mountain for example)

Ironic how that happens.....don't agree with a movie, don't see it.

Yup.  I watched Trading Places (the Dan Aykroyd/EddieMurphy comedy) for the first time in years, and I was surprised at how much nudity there was.  Mainstream Hollywood has definitely gotten a lot more prudish.

For the sexy films, you have to look at independent films now.

Not exposed skin, it's people in sexual acts. The NC-17 threats are usually for excessive thrusting, going down on someone, gay stuff.  Not just a woman walking out of the shower.  Go see "This Film is not Yet Rated" and you'll see a lot more than nudity.
