Looks like a cottonmouth. Would know for sure if I could see a better view of the head (or the inside of the mouth). My guess is he was near some water- lake/river/creek/ditch/ etc. Aggressive with a nasty bite if its a cottonmouth.

I know copperhead is different species.

They are semi aquatic, thus their nickname " water moccasin", as noted above, they are feisty and will sometimes advance on you if they feel threatened.

The one in the OP's picture is a very stout one at that.

Come one man, who here hasn't wrestled with a water moccasin with only a knife, you got this.

I hunt slews, river bottoms, etc. cottonmouth snakes are like other said, "@ssholes of snake world". We would have 3-4 guys wading and go through a few boxes of 12 gauge shells just on writhing balls of cottonmouth snakes to clear out blinds, hunting shacks, running trot lines.

An easy way to tell is to gently tug the tail. You see water snakes, the harmless kind, will just try to slither away even as you hold the tail. A moccasin though will turn and try to strike.

I'd suggest going and giving his tail a gentle, friendly tug and see what happens. That will reveal what type of snake it is.

Note kids shouldnt try this, they get a bit too excited and can pull too hard on the tail. Tis causes the snake to detach its tail!

You are mistaken.

GD snake-haters have educated me so that I now know that Moccasins will actively hunt humans who are in their territory, viciously and wantonly attacking them for no reason (except that they are the assholes/demons/evil undead/murderous killers of the snake world, and that every responsible American must kill as many of them as possible.

Here's a picture of a moccasin attacking a hiking shoe that had an American's toe jam scent in it.  Vicious bastard!

got all the traits of a cottonmouth

in water its hard to tell if its a cottonmouth or just a water snake
but that dude looks 100% cottonmouth / water moccasin

eta: a great indicator that you cant see is the belly
water snakes and mud snakes have yellow bellies and a cottonmouth has the pattern on the belly that you see in the OP
