After 2 months on a dying market, I'm finally in escrow.  So now I need to decide where to go.  I have family and friends in both states, so I know I want to live right near the border between Oregon and Washington.  But I know Washington has some silly gun laws, and Oregon is being liberalized.  I know Washington has no income tax, and Oregon has no sales tax.  So from a tax point of view, if I wanted to contribute as little as possible to both states, I'd live in Washington and buy goods in Oregon.

To California escapees, where did you go and why?

To Oregon and Washington natives, where should I go and why?

Oregon seems like a great state, but the hippies in Eugene REALLY pissed me off.

No MG's in WA, you can have suppressors, but can't use them...

Have you checked with the respective hometown forums?

I vote Washington.  The only down side gun wise is you can own supressors, but cant shoot through them.   No SBR's or MG's either.  Other than that it's a shall issue state and there's no other limits as far I can remember.

BTW, if you think Oreagon is the only state under the liberal gun, Wa. is too.  We've just managed to keep them behind cover.  They tried to pass a state AWB but failed a few years ago.

no personal offense.
But you know, all the Kali refugee's say they are leaving because of X,Y, or Z and then many of them (not you I'm sure), come and f*ck up other states exactly in their image.
So, it applies to some of them for damn sure.

Believe it or not, upstate NY is a great place for outdoor sportsmen.  Great hunting, fishing, hiking, etc.  Very rural for the most part.  Mostly pretty conservative, except in larger cities.

Unfortunately, due to our misfortune in sharing a state with NYC, our state's laws suck.  No NFA, AWB, permit required just to own a handgun.

On the other hand, it's a damn sight better than Kali.

Move to a Portland suburb; Beaverton, Tigard, Sherwood, Newberg, Lake Oswego, etc.. The further you move from the city proper, the less expensive it becomes by roughly 1k/mile. My wife and I just built a house in Newberg that cost us 289k, in Portland it would have been 330k.
Income tax and property tax are high - this is how the state compensates for lack of a sales tax.  Gun laws are relaxed and the Sheriff's are pro gun, signing off on the majority of Class 3 paperwork. Overall I have been happy since moving here 12 years ago from the Bay Area.

TX cause I thought I would be able to enjoy buying guns. Instead my ass got laid off. Can't get a job. No money to buy guns. Instead I sold my guns I bought in CA. No social life to speak of. Really do feel like a refugee.

Hope you have better luck than I did. I'll be back in CA by the end of Jan 07 to pick my life back up. Unless I get this job in Chicago that I've put in for. After 2 interviews, my head hunter says I am one of the top candidates. Waiting till after the holidays to receive word.

After my experience, my "life" in CA far outweighed what I got by moving to TX.

Oregon's gun laws are really only better as far as NFA stuff is concerned. If you don't care about NFA stuff or only want to own silencers, it's a wash. It's easier to get a CCW here, no silly class requirements.

Look, I appreciate your gunness
but what you don't realize is even though you are conservative for California, you are a liberal everywhere else.
Sure, maybe not you personally, but 99.835% of them.
And they have their own little socialist things that they want to do (guns, schools, HOA's, taxes, etc or not)

Nonetheless, get on out of Kali
BTW, both those staes you mention are RULED by their liberal port cities (portland and seattle), no matter how conservative the rest of the state is, they are ruined by those big cities that are incredibly liberal.
go to Nevada.

WHAT??? Oh PLEASE justify the 99.835%.. Where is that statistically written?

And we are liberal everywhere else? How does THAT work out? PLEASE enlighten me.. what is your litmus test? I'll take it.

There are 58 counties in the state of California... TWO of them are known for their liberal stances.. So the other 56 counties are to be bunched in with two moronic land masses?

Fact that if you look at the voting record of the state, (Red vs. Blue) the majority of the state falls in the "Red" catagory.

PLEASE give me some facts here to support your argument.

Holy crap
You know what the first sign of a liberal is?
They don't have a sense of humor  (that BTW is true)
and goodness knows you are proving it here.
Of course I just made it up.  99.835%, where woudl I get a number like that?
If it's not true, why does EVERY western state bitch about californian's?  Not nevadan's, not arizonians', not even oregon people.  But exclusively and 100% California.
Great, if it's such a conservative state, then why do you have more stupid laws and politicians than Mass?
C'mon.  You obviously have an ax to grind.  Go get your little HOA controlled patio home in Portland or Seattle next to the Starbucks and sit and complain about how "back in California we would never do things like this, we should change them to do it our way" and wonder why natives hate every single californian they come in contact with.
It's obviously escaping you.

WA. No income tax.

A good dose of CA gun owners could make WA a red state. WA would have a R governor and senator if it had just a few more conservatives.

you think Canadian conservatives are as conservative as American Republicans?  Try again, the most conservative Canadian is left of the democrats.  (Most of my team is in Montreal, trust me on this).

A conservative in California is not the same as a conservative in Montana.  Big difference.  A liberal in Montana is a conservative in LA.
Does that fail to make sense to you?

You made that statement. Just admit that you made up that statement and this debate will rest on that and you and I can go back to making fun of Feinstein, Boxer, Kerry et al... The real problem we have... not each other.

Of course I made it up
Doesn't mean it isn't true.
What californians think is conservative is not what the rest of us in conservative states think is conservative.

and what passes for a liberal here in real life land (err I mean, not in California) would be laughed out of San Fran as a flaming bush right winger.
And that's what most Californians don't realize.
What they think is normal, what is normal in their state is entirely not normal nor acceptable in many places.
Why is that so hard to get thru?

I can't believe how much the word "California" stirs people up.  Because I'm from California, I'm automatically an illegal alien-loving, socialist-wanting, welfare-sucking tax dodger who wants all guns destroyed, and I want to do the same to YOUR state.  "Go to the state I'm not in, I don't want you!"  Yeah, I don't want YOU in my thread.

Frige, I try not to argue with kids because even if you're right, you're wrong.  But thanks for trying.

So, back to the homeowning adults in this thread, any other opinions?  Several suggestions of Idaho, but I'm afraid the choices are between Oregon and Washington.  Idaho is too far from my family.

What decisions should I base my move on besides gun laws and taxes?

I should introduce you to a few Alberta good ol' boys, and some Evangelicals from Fraser Valley B.C.

Geeez, I'm starting to see the guy from California's point. Besides, Boulder aint exactly a pinnacle of conservative thought either. That makes you by default more left wing than the guy from Montana, right ?

There was a time, when gunowners in other states welcomed conservative gun owning Californians with open arms.

This is getting ridiculous.

A conservative Californian is actually a liberal anywhere else? Now, I've heard it all.

I will tell you right here and now, that the average Amador County resident is ALOT more freedom loving and conservative than a your average Denver resident, and that's a fact.
