Undated -

Last week one of our C-23 Sherpas flew into a US operated airfield in Iraq during the day and saw there was construction equipment on the runway. Yet there was no NOTAM (notice to airmen). A trench was being dug in the runway, and it was not marked. Its a long runway and they just landed beyond the construction. They filed a safety hazard report that was immediately forwarded to our higher headquarters and to the Air Force wing based here.

Well, it seems the construction continued and still was not marked or NOTAMed or anything. A C-130 landed on the runway the night of the 29th and didn't see the construction. It wound up going through what is now a large pit on the runway.

A few pictures are attached. The C-130 was totaled. There were several injuries to the crew and the few passengers that were on board but luckily nobody was killed. Quite the set of failures somewhere in the system regarding this improper construction and no notifications about it.

Probably some kind of Radar, or IR/RF sensor.  My guess is it isn't a standard cargo hauling
C-130, but some kind of surveillance plane.  Just my guess though.

Glad there were no deaths resulting from that. We have a neighbor who is a Marine pilot flying one of those over there. I'll be showing the kids these pics to remind them why we keep praying for all our servicemen and women.

The locals complained about too much noise from the planes, so the workers were making giant rumble strips to slow the planes down.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We are on final approach and we ask that you return your seats and trays to their upright and locked positions, and that you fasten your seat belts. Current local time is 03:18, current local temperature is 68 degrees.
Thank you for fly..... (WHAM)....What the fuXX was that? Ah shit.....there goes my perfect landing record.

Lockheed needs to rethink that rough field landing thing again. If any other aircraft hit that, I doubt it would have survived as well as the 130. A tribute to the toughness of the old bird. Glad everyone was okay.

They should be able to buff that right out.

I don't think it's a concrete slab, it looks to me like plain ole dirt that's been compacted prior to having new concrete poured on top of it.

look closer, there are two vertical pour lines, and a crack in it, and notice the dirt piled on top and a few white scrapes in it...

Co worker who spent last year in Iraq tells me that is Camp Speicher...the runway was initially repaired by the 4ID 229th Engineering (his unit). However, what they fixed, was nothing more than a patch job (due to limited materials and funding). This was a bomb crater that was made in the initial assault.

He tells me it was probably being repaired better by another company...the last picture on the RH side, you can see a water tower...my friend's barraks were across the road from the water tower...that's how he knows where it is.

You might remember the pictures I posted of him sitting in Saddam's spider hole, and standing in front of  his truck that caught fire.....
