Just when I thought I might be retired "early."
Several things come about to screw my plans. First the new wife is talkin' about "young uns." At first I thought she meant her girlfreinds but it turns out she means children. And it isn't just her, I wan't them too. I gotta leave this stuff to somebody. Second, I'm bored. I've fixed everything in the house, twice. I'm starting deck projects, etc. If it gets any worse I swear I'm gonna rearrange furniture. And third, more toys. I really thought I was almost done. I thought I had almost all of them. But of course, that is exactly when the best deals on really cool firearms you never even considered before show up. So, I need a job. I need a job to "plan" for the children. My wife said "things will just work out" and I said "I bet that's how homeless people planned things." I really thought we might live off the interest indefinately but after doing the math, it aint gonna work. So, I need a job, but not just any job. It must fit the following criteria: 1. Pay more than minimum wage. I won't need six figures but I will need a little more than Burger King can pay. 2. No more "high speed" stuff. I wan't to raise my children, not have my wife tell them what a great Dad they had before he got KIA. This effectively rules out all LE stuff. 3. Looking for full time, not all time. Again, I wan't to raise my children and not just see pictures of them on my desk. This effectively rules out the "pilot" stuff. And as a result, I can't come up with anything. I can't make it any worse coming here for suggestions. What do you do? What I need is an "average joe" job. You go to work, do your stuff, get paid and go home to the family kinda thing. Any advice? Any of you guys have your own business in Broward Co. Florida and want to hire a new shooting buddy? |
|
Why rule out the "pilot" stuff? Fly a traffic report aircraft. Mornings & afternoons, weekends off.

Two words - Government Job! Take a test - get a job! You don't do crap , get a decent wage, and good bennies . [:D] Plus you become a "mole" who can supply all us patriots with invaluable intel! [;)] |

Steyr- Your ex DEA buddies can't set you up with a good consultant job? How about firearms instructor? Didn't you say you were a pilot, you could charter for people?
I am a teacher and in California it just isn't worth the hassle. Plus you learn that the people teaching your kids are those that really couldn't "do". (like me [;)] ) But you might want to get a job teaching if the hassles in your state aren't too bad or teach for a private school. Pay isn't so bad when you figure in you are working 186 days out of the year. Hell, I make 40 and don't even have my full credential yet. You will have a lot of time for the kids if you don't hate all kids by the time you get home from work. I have actually been in somewhat of the same boat as I am getting tired of the job and the wife makes enough for both of us but she won't let me stop working. I just want to find a job I don't have to take home with me. Oh, well. Good luck and congrats on your choice. Don't want any for myself but we need more kids brought into good homes. Edit- I can spell but my punctuation sucks. |

I know your not that fond of me right now but Irecently retired so I understand your situation. Have you ever thought aboout teaching at a college? How about traveling around the world giving speeches, you can make a fair sum of money doing that. Or my personal favorite is selling out whole groups of people for my own personal gain. I am a president who is still committed to helping people, so I hope this helps you. [smoke]

Have you ever considered Retail Loss Prevention? There are a lot of good positions out there in Electronics stores and Grocery stores that pay over 30k a year to start. You would be basically watching and using Tilt-Pan-Zoom camera systems catching shoplifters. They have area trainers that make good salaries. If your looking for full time money on a part time schedule you might consider being a bouncer or a parking lot monitor for a strip Club. A buddy of mine used to get $25 an hour under the table walking women to their cars after hours at clubs....
It's going to be hard for you to escape your field...Plus that's were the money is at. John |
|
Steyr, if you can handle the non-physical and overly-intellectual nature, a career in the computer field is a decent way to make a living. I worked in a shop building cabinets with a bunch of miserable grunts until I graduated to an air-conditioned office, decent eye-candy (sales or marketing babes usually), and about double my old salary (and still climbing). But like I said, not for everyone. Tech support is usually a good way in, and lots of places to go from there.

Open an "adult movie store". Most of us who have been around for a while have already seen pictures of your collection. [0:)]

Back to the FFL/SOT idea.
If you have ever seen the ads for prestige arms in gunlist, you will know how to do it right (e-mail for more info). You can buy pre-samples. There is a guy on subguns.com selling a collection for $40,000 including a few transferables and a few pre-samples. One of the pre-samples is a BAR--I seem to recall your mentioning that at one point. Buy and sell a few MAC's, UZI's, etc. Just enough to pay for the FFL and SOT for the year--$200 initial, $90 renewal and $500 SOT--easy enough to make back on a few sales. It gives you a hobby, a way to get cheap guns, and a good reason to put a vault in the basement. Then you can start to look for a real job. AFARR |

Do like the local White Trash Minions do around here and put a rack on your pickup and buy a magnetic sign sign that says" Steyr AUG General Contracting"
It doesnt matter if you can do the work or not as long as you have the truck you can bill $25 an hour to fuck up somebodys Kithen/bath ! Just think of the Double Wide you could afford then ! |
|
If you have enough to get by and money is not a large issue for you, then consider what job you would pay them to do and go for it. If it's something you really like and are good at, the pay will follow.

I sit in a gray walled box 8 hours a day dotting I's and crossing T's. Occasionally a random farking A$$HOLE will wander by and blow $hit at me. I really can't recommend it...

Well let's see what we have...
1. Fly a traffic report aircraft. Working for the local media whom I despise....ummmm NO. 2. Man whore. Keep forgetting to collect payment. 3. Trying teaching school. I used to work for the Broward County School Board. So NO. 4. FFL/SOT My VERY FIRST thought. But I don't want to try and feed my kids on the occasional 10% markup on a $250.00 shotgun. Like I said, I need more than minimum wage. 5. Become a lobbyist. Don't have the right connections or mentality for this or similar cushy BS jobs. 6. Two words - Government Job! Affirmative action don't work for me. 7. How about firearms instructor? Didn't you say you were a pilot, you could charter for people. Around here everyone and their Mom is a "firearm expert" regardless of skill. Too much loser competition who can more effectively promote themselves. Charter pilot is a good idea, and one I looked into. Heavily saturated and only feasable if you own your own aircraft, I don't. Otherwise you are a loser employer with about the income and dignity of a taxi driver. 8. Retail Loss Prevention Would prefer to not restrain assholes for a living. But it's an idea. 9. computer field Trust me, wrong guy. 10. a bouncer or a parking lot monitor for a strip Club Possibly the best idea so far. Keep 'em coming. |
|
How about going into business for yourself as a smuggler.
You're a pilot and know the SOP of the DEA. So you'll know how to circumvent them. Or you could consult for smugglers. Or, you could be a pilot for a commercial airline. Arent you a chopper pilot? You could do flightseeing chopper tours for cruise line passengers in Alaska, or in Hawaii. |
|
What, you didn't care for "Mall Ninja"? Whassamatter with you?
Seriously, if some risk isn't such a biggie, I considered a private business Bail Bond Enforcement. You have an office, you issue bail bonds, and occaisionally go hunt down the scum who don't return to court. Fun, eh? It'd be work, but not all risk, and it's certainly not in the risk level of beat cop. Piloting aircraft or even private watercraft(you figger it out) would be very cool too, but that's up to you. Juggernaut. |
|
Go for a blue collar job. Work for the county. Excellent benefits and when have you ever seen a county "worker" working? If you don't like that work for a propane company or energy company. I'm sure Broward county needs lots of energy. Where in Broward county are you?
|
|
I hear that the 'National Enquirer' is looking for a good photographer (LOL).
But seriously, if you are interested in private security work, a friend can put you in touch with good payers. |
|
How about a gunsmith.
Work out of your home, garage etc. See the kids & wife all day, working on all kinds of weapons. Kinda like working & playing at the same time. Sound pretty enticing ?? ColtShorty GOA KABA COA JPFO SAF NRA "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them." |

from your prerequisites SteyrAUG I would say a home based small business of some kind. Something your good at that you enjoy. Martial arts comes to mind. Or combine that with firearms training and set up a self defense school. Train people with CCW's,etc, etc.
|
|
steyr, maybe im not paying attention but what (if any) previous job(s) have you had
i got an idea. you can come work warehouse distrabution with me, start at 8 $ an hour, can got a lot higher. and you get to drive a forklift. |
|
Elected Offical. Find the most liberal piece of
shit in your state and kick their ass out of office. |
|
Broward Co., you say? Only one job suits a man of your obvious qualities and training and sophistication--election judge.
Also, you said you need someone to will your toys to? Are you kidding? I guess this means we're not in your will? [:(] |
|
First of all, make sure your wife has a good paying job. Than go out and get a job that you enjoy, even if it doesn't pay much.
|
|
I haven't seen anyone offer up the obvious 1st choice---LORD of the MANOR.
Let the wife work up until she gives birth... Draw "Father's Right to stay Home" benefits until she can work again. Hire a Ninny, I mean, Nanny to take care of the kid while resuming the LORD'S work. OR, Become a Gov't Thug...er, I mean, Employee. As it has been said, it's good work and great bennies. Solid jobs aren't easy to get, let alone keep. OR, Visit your local supermarket for some cardboard; they'll probably even loan you a Magic Marker... Hope that helps. |
|
bandit, I forgot....I can sell pics I ALREADY HAVE...to the Enquirer. Thanks.
Colt Shorty, good idea but code and zoning and the fact they don't have steady reliable income. Striker, as previously noted, too many archair experts in the field. mattsd, If I was still in Iowa I'd drive the crap out of your forklift. Unfortunately the wife has a good job in here in S. Florida. BM007 I already am LORD OF THE MANOR, it just don't pay jack. Still looking I guess. I have come to the conclusion that it is 95% who you know. Unfortunately the guys I know that I like are regular slobs lucky to just have jobs themselves and the guys I know in positions of power and influence already know I think they are assholes. I made a point of telling them. Sometimes I'm way too honest for my own good. |

There's a place called "t'aint"...
Kinda like that phrase, "I'm in between jobs..." |

Go to beauty school and become a hair stylist. Then all you have to do is act gay and the rich women clients will come rolling in. Steyr is even a European name, they'll love it!

"ACT GAY"?
Yeah! Affect a "lithp" and a "hiss", and practice by saying "scissors"!!! |

or better yet a surveillance professional. We have all seen first hand that you're good at that. BTW what ever happened to your neighbors daughter?

Try being a pimp. Tax Free $$..great fringe benefits...part time..flexible hours...

SA, I've got a buddy who makes some pretty serious cash doing auto detailing. He works out of a shop that he built next to his house (Nice garage aka tax write off) and works as much or as little as he wants to.
Of course there's always "Phone Sex Operator" if my first idea was too boring. PS Your "Too Much Free Time", "Nothing to Do" and probably "Gotta Buy More Guns" problems will disappear once you have a couple of "Young 'uns". [>Q] |

I have no suggestions. Not quite sure what you like to do or have done in the past.
I, like a dumb $hit(?????), went and received my 4 year 'higher education' degree....in Horticulture. And what do I go and do....family farm falls in my lap. Granted, I'm one of the lucky ones (?), as in I'm not married ....since everyone else I went to school (high school) is getting hitched. (Might give some of you a hint of my age group.... one or two out there know my age.) And just to further my 'habbit' of firearms related topics, I decided to get hired on the local school.......as a bus driver. I suppose $13.35 an hour isn't bad....for only 4 or so hours a day. Still leave stime to 'farm'. About driving forklifts......usually the crap is driven out of them. If you have a CDL, you could always hire on as a local truck driver. The test isn't that hard. A county/state job is okay, good benefits. The part on who you know..true. How you think I got the driver job??? Friend's mom is the Vice Principal of one of the schools.... As I originally said, don't know your past employment history. All I suggest is, get something that pays well, good benefits, good hours and most importantly..... YOU LIKE THE JOB. My experiance has been, from friends, if you don't like the job, even if it has $$$$, it'll cause you more trouble. My $.02 Happy hunting....... Kaliburz |

BARTENDER! I work in a bar, wear my gun all night, meet lots of nice people, make a decent wage, rake in MEGA-UNDECLARED $$$, have fun, sing along with the jukebox, dance on the bar, eat greasy burgers anytime I'm hungry, and when I was single met lots of chicks. Any monkey can tend bar.

Contact O.J. I hear hes still looking for Nicoles killer. As long as you stay away from him, You won't find the killer thereby assuring you a lifetime job!![;D]

Check out chimney sweeping. I bought my business from my uncle for $8,000 and had it paid for within two months.
Small investment and make your own hours. You'll have a busy season but the good thing is, you can make enough money during that time to carry you through the slow season, even take a couple months off a year. So far, for the 2001 I've taken 5 weeks off altogether, and will probably take at least two more before the busy season rolls around. Or, you can make good money just working for someone else. www.csia.org www.ncsg.org chimneys.com ...[^] P.S. Just don't start working in my area! [:D] |

You need to do something physical, yet not too dangerous, for a few reasons:
1.) You're a fellow martial artist. I don't know WHAT all you've taken, but I know well enough that you can probably handle almost anybody in 95% of the situations you'll encounter with those hands...the other 5% involves the Glock 27 in your pocket. Being a bouncer at a local nightclub or bar (one that doesn't have TOO shady an atmosphere of rough guys) is my first choice for you. 2.) Doing a physical, but not overly-demanding job keeps your body in shape, and you'll thank the benefits both in the backyard with the kids (down the road) and in the bedroom (hopefully always on that road). Good way to live long and stay healthy. 3.) Are you anywhere close to being qualified as a co-instructor for any particular study? I DO know that any Joe Schmoe with a 2nd or 3rd Deg. Black can go teach for some so-so income at TaeKwonDo Plus...and they need good instructors. I've made visits to many of their locations in AL years ago, and I can say I'm truly unimpressed with their Senseis. Conclusion: Try staying active, but doing something you're good at and won't kill you at the end of the day. |

Sorry SA, but I was looking for a new job too, and thought; Why the hell not, look at this post.
I'm active duty Navy, and E-4 pay just aint cutt'n it. So I need one too with flexible hours, and something I don't mind doing; but I really don't care about pay (I get paid less than minimum wage now if you do the math [>:/]). Personally, I've thought about RadioShack (they get paid by commission), PC repair (but you already said that wasn't for you). Do you know any computer programming languages? Maybe you can program for private customers if you did. I can't think of anything else myself, sorry... |
|
Several places here in good ol Iowa are looking for flight instructors? Pay aint bad, you have roots here anyway do you not? and our schools are still some of the best in the nation
other than the gun laws kinda suck, but not bad either |
