I powered on my Abit A8 mobo today but it never got past POST code 0.4. , the post sqeuence would go like this: f1, c1, f1, c1, 0.4.

I only have 1 stick of ram. I heard that these mobos use dual channel ram so that would mean that I need another stick of ram, is this right?

I am running if off a 300W transformer since we only have 220 euro plugs here in Iraq.

System specs:

ABIT AN8
AMD 64 3700 San Diego
Tagen 480W PSU
ATI Radeon x850 XT PE
WD Raptor 10000rpm 74G x2
Corsair XMS ram 1x1GB
Pioneer Dual layer DVDRW

has it always run this way, or did you just built it??

usually if it will only run dual channel when you turn it on it will give beep codes. (if your running on one stick of ram i mean)

it should still run. but not in dual channel mode. That is how the P4 are. The AMD 64 i am not sure i haven't built as many 64 as I have P4's.... someone will have the right answer

wow im trying to download the manual for that board I think ill have it in about an hour

try the stick of RAM in each slot.

it fixed one of the ones i've run across.

ok the manual says it will run on one stick of ram but in will run in single mode (64bit) instead of dual mode (128bit)

either single or double sided ram need to be in dimm1 slot

I put to ram back in DIMM 1 but I still get the POST code 0.4.

Do I have a dead mobo? The biuld was a fresh biuld, the comp had never been powered up before.

If the board is dead, what other mobo should I get?

I would lean toward a bad board yes. pull out all device but the basics and see what id does then

According the abits forum, I have a bad board because I am not the only one getting this error.

They all get different POST codes but we all get the same beeps.

I dont feel like waiting two months for a replacement mobo from ABit so I wil jsut buy another AN8. If that ones doesnt work, it may be time to start a class action lawsiut against abit.

If this board was recently purchased, exchange it at the place you bought it from. I'd only try warranty service if its been past 30 days.

We test lots of hardware and build 1000's of AMD systems a year. I would recommned an Asus board as first choice and a MSI board as second choice. For chipset choice. I'd go with a Nforce first, Via second, and ATI third.

I don't work on 1000s of AMD systems, but the Maximum PC magazine says to use Asus Mobos + NForce chipsets.

+1 on the Nforce 4 mobo and check out ABXzone, lots of info there.

I saw that anothe rguy had the same post error as me even with kingston ram. I already bought a new AN8 and it will take 2 weeks to get here but I still say dead mobo.

Would someone be kind enough to loan me a stick of DDR400 ram, any type/brand as long as it works? I just want to see if it is my ram. I am deployed so I am the only one with a desktop. I will pay ya some $$ for the temp use of your ram.

I jsut want to see if it is the ram.
