MONTGOMERY — In the month since Alabama’s multifaceted gun law took effect, some sheriffs in north Alabama said they haven’t seen many problems, but they have seen a lot more paperwork.
The number of people applying for concealed carry permits has increased, or even doubled in some cases.
Colbert County received 595 applications in August, Sheriff Ronnie May said.
“That is at least double what we ordinarily do in a month,” he said.
On Wednesday, he had a stack of about 70 applications on his desk waiting for his review. About one-third of those were from 18-, 19- and 20-year-old applicants.
“We’ve had a significant increase in the number of 18- to 20-year-olds,” May said.
As for those under 21, Blakely said he’s talking to their parents before issuing permits, unless applicants are members of the armed forces.
“If they were in the military, I always issue it,” he said.
Blakely has voiced opposition to the new law.
“One of the biggest concerns I’ve had was that it brought a lot of attention to the open carry aspect, which makes some people nervous,” he said.
The law clarifies that carrying a handgun in the open, without a permit, is not an offense.
“Time will tell if it’s going to be a problem,” he said.

I really wish someone would break dick off in some of these sheriffs.
