I was in the Pasadena Gun Center the other day and noticed a display on the wall that has a revolver with the top strap blown out by a Blazer cartridge. They, and 2 other ranges I go to will not allow Blazers to be used.

I had not heard of these catastrophic blow-ups, and wondered if anyone else had seen/heard about this. I have 4 boxes of .45 and 3 boxes of .357 that I'm hesitant to shoot now.

Any opinions?

What was the caliber of the blown-up gun?

Looked to be a .38 because it didn't look stout enough to handle .357's.

The Blazer aluminum cased stuff seems hotter than its brass counterparts to me anyway.. 9mm, 10mm and .45 all seem that way...

TOP STRAP? Hmmm wondering if there is more to the story. NOT doubting you HH... just that people screw around with their guns and ammo or whatever and then blame the ammo.

I dont care for Blazer ammo but when I did use it, never had a problem with it. Doesnt mean someone else has. Millions of rounds made Im sure a couple could slip through QC.

Most ranges that I know of who don't allow blazer is because they have to sort out the blazer from the brass for reloading.

Sounds like someone tried to load a .357 Magnum in a revolver designed for .38 special.

And succeeded. Momentarily. Must have had pretty generous cylinder gap. I tried to load a .357 in one of my Smiths when I started reloading .357 to see if I could screw up. Wouldn't close.

I think I remember seeing something like that... but it was some dumbass that reloaded a blazer aluminum case, and did so too hot for the cartridge/firearm.

Thanks, guys...I think I'll go ahead and shoot the ammo and pray nothing goes wrong.

I'll be buying nothing but factory-brass ammo from now on.

I always had good luck with Blazer, except for thier .357 Magnum loads. Fired cases were the devil to get out of the cylinder of my Model 19.

Strangely I didn't have this problem with the .44 magnum or pistol loads.

How the heck did somebody suceed in reloading a berdan primed case? That just doesn't make sense. MJD

I have shot thousands upon thousands of Blazer 9mm with zero issues.

There was an article in Guns and Ammo years ago on how to do it.

You need to make a turning off set primer punch. It is really simple to do. The G&A article only advocated it for casing that you could not find that were boxer primed.

I've shot over 1000 rounds of blazer .45 without a problem.

I also remember something about filling the fired case 1/2 full of water, then using a dowel rod closely-fit to the ID of the case to pop the primer out.

i shoot about 6-7k rounds of 9mm blazer a year. NEVER had any problems with it other than occasional stove pipes from light loads. Blazer 9mm is NOT a hot load by any means.

I've shot tons of Blazer in 9mm and .45. Never a problem.
