...vent holes in bottom 6 inches or so or not?

Hell if you don't... the rust surely will.

I say a few won't hurt nothing.

I cut 4 paths from the bottom roll to within 12" of the top using a torch.

Yeah, shoot 'em about 6"

Yep

Use a pick to make the holes for extra credit.

Make them large enough to get a shovel on to clean out the ashes as it burns. If not the ashes will plug off the holes. I would put vent holes at least 2 feet up.

Easier just to let mesquite burn the barrel bottom out.

20 round mag dump from an AR will ventilate it for you.

Cut both ends off, put it on some bricks. When fire is out and barrel is cool, lift barrel and shovel ashes.

I've read to do it and others say to not worry about it.  All seem to recommend a hole in the bottom for water drainage.  What about a grate for the top?

Overthinking it probably.  Some of the info from the enviros is crazy.

A grate over the top is a must if you burn paper products. You would be amazed at how some of those paper embers can go and still catch dry grass on fire.

always poked holes randomly around the bottom, seems the barrels rust out or wander off too much anyhow.

I use mine for target practice with a G20 or 29 first.

Usually from about 30 yards.

1 full mag in the bottom third and she's ready to use.

This..........

I postion the fire brick so there are vent slots when you sit the open ended barrel down on them so there is no need to shoot holes in the barrel.. I drive 3 steel fence posts in the ground to support the sides of the barrel so the wind does not blow it away.  Just use a piece of steel expanded wire over the top to keep "flyers" inside.

When it cools just slide the barrel up against the fence posts, prop it up and shovel the junk/ash out then let it slide back down. It's a bit more work up front but I've gotten a quite few years of service from barrels with both ends cut out.

This method is usually the way it's done around here in NC.
We don't have one; we live in town.

You can always spot the squarish holes.

You can add holes to the sides of you want.  Once the burnt trash builds up, they will eventually be covered up anyway.  We have never done anything but put a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage, and recently started laying a piece of expanded metal on the top to prevent stuff from blowing away and keep animals out.

While I am at it, if you have stray dogs turning your barrels over at night, you can set them on a car tire, connect a bare wire to the barrel, and run an extension cord to the bare wire.  Someone once told me that it was a really effective deterrent to this.

Damn, that brings back memories of when I was a little kid.  Everyone in town had a burn barrel on the edge of their front yard.  You poked holes near the bottom and burned your trash.  The garbage men would come by once a week and empty the ashes and unburned trash into the garbage truck.

I remember my younger would just about go nuts when Mom would come out of the house with a paper bag of garbage.  His eyes would light up and he'd go running for the nearest stick or twig he could get his hands on, the little pyromaniac.  I swear, he'd play around in the fire for hours if we'd let him.

We called him "Firebug" when we were little. Ah, memories.

Yup nothing larger then 3 ft high and it has to be clean wood.  No brushpiles, no leaves, no scrap lumber.  If you own X amount of AG land you are exempt for some of it.  No burning trash.  Which is a kick in the fucking teeth as most of the local landfills where I grew up were shut down because of the DEP (NYC water supply) regulations. So all the locals have to pay transfer fees.

Fucking Hippies

A chrome lined barrel will clean up easier and won't foul with soot as fast as a non lined.

Sounds good to me.  Usually put some rebar in a little above the holes to support a metal grate.  Now if you want to have some fun, rig it so you can hook up a shop vac (or leaf blower) and forced air intake .

We vent ours.  Well, my parents have me vent theirs.

Used to just use a crowbar to jab holes in the sides but at certain heights it allows flame to shoot out...kind of a hazard.  I try to alternate shots every 1' at 90 degrees aiming toward the bottom.  In the end you get a nice bottom with several holes for water drainage and plenty of holes up the sides are varying heights to allow oxygen to get in and water to get out.  Works well.

Lived on some acreage in GA for awhile, had 2 burn barrels.  7/8" hole saw in the bottom and bottom third, about 15-20 holes.  Set it on bricks to let air get in the bottom, let 'er rip.  Believe it or not, it makes for a pleasant afternoon.  Tip it over when it cools to keep the rain out, roll it to where you want to dump it.  Very efficient way to turn a huge brush pile into a manageable amount of ash.   Check with your local FD for a "burn permit".  I would look for stuff to burn.

Expensive at $300+ but it burns so hot it'll consume stuff you might not normally want to burn.

When they were legal here I'd shoot them any old place and they still seemed to burn ok.
